Udo Kießling (born May 21, 1955 in Crimmitschau ) is a former German ice hockey player . With 321 b appearances, he is the record player for the German men's national team . In the 1981/82 season he also played an NHL game for the Minnesota North Stars , making it the first German a player in NHL history.

Career

When he was born, his father Gerhard Kießling was the coach of the GDR national ice hockey team . His parents moved to West Berlin in 1957 . In Krefeld, where his father started his first coaching position in West Germany, Udo started ice skating before his third birthday. His father had brought children's skates for him from Canada. At Preussen Krefeld , Udo played in his youth. Even when his father took a job in Frankfurt, Udo traveled to Krefeld on weekends to play there. During the week he trained with his father.

A job at the DEB brought his father to Garmisch-Partenkirchen . Udo therefore switched to SC Riessersee . There he made his debut in the Bundesliga together with Ignaz Berndaner . As the two young defenders made a good impression, national coach Gerhard Kießling nominated his son and Berndaner for the German national team for the 1973 ice hockey world championship .

The Augsburg EV was the next stop for Kießling after the World Cup. He couldn't prevent the team's relegation, but was voted one of the best defenders in the All-Star team. In 1974 he moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for EV Rosenheim , where his father was hired as a coach. He made promotion to the Bundesliga with Rosenheim in his first year. In 1981 he played his first and only NHL game for the Minnesota North Stars , because he stayed in the ice hockey Bundesliga despite a contract offer.

He played a total of 1,020 games in the top German division and scored 881 points scorer. With the Cologne EC he was German champion six times . Internationally, he is Germany's record-breaking male player with 321 b internationals - Andrea Lanzl had 322 internationals by February 2020. In addition, Kießling was a world record player until 2003.

Particular successes were winning the bronze medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics and being appointed to the All-Star Team at the 1987 World Cup. In total, he took part in five Olympic Games and once in the Canada Cup . Due to injury, he ended his active career in 1996 and has lived in Cologne ever since. His extraordinary talent and successes were recognized with the induction into the Hall of Fame Germany and the IIHF Hall of Fame .
