The 1984 Winter Olympics took place in Sarajevo , Yugoslavia . The Olympic ice hockey tournament was held from February 7th to 19th. Twelve teams took part in this tournament.

Eligible to participate were host Yugoslavia, the eight teams in Group A of the 1983 Ice Hockey World Championship , and the two best teams in Group B. Since the GDR did not exercise its right to start as sixth in the A-WM, Austria moved up as third in the B group. The last starting place was played in a qualification between the B group third and the C group winner. For Austria - already qualified directly as third in the B group after the GDR waived - Norway took part in the elimination as fourth in the B group.

The competition mode has not been changed compared to the previous Olympic tournament, only that a game for seventh place was also played this year.

In contrast to 1980 , this Olympic ice hockey tournament did not bring any major surprises. The reigning world champion from the USSR won the gold medal for the sixth time and was equal to the previous record holder Canada in terms of the number of Olympic victories. The defending champion USA's performance was disappointing.

Norway qualified for the Olympic ice hockey tournament.

Amateur traits

The roster was announced by the Austrian association (coach Rudolf Killias ) on January 10; there were 19 players, a twentieth should still be named. After the Finnish federation demanded the elimination of several Austrian cracks because of previous professional activity, but then withdrew its protest on the morning of February 6th, the IOC excluded the striker Greg Holst , who played for Innsbruck ; Helmut Koren was nominated in his place. However, the disqualification of Holst was more of an exemplary measure, because all the Austro-Canadians had made money years ago. This was commented accordingly by the Austrian media, with the »Tiroler Tageszeitung« suspecting that Vienna had abandoned the Tyrol because “it was not a Viennese player, only a Tyrolean player was affected”. For disciplinary reasons, the Austrians had already done without Jeff Geiger , who played at Feldkirch and who had exceeded the "Zapfenstreich" during the preparations in Klagenfurt (Geiger himself, however, said in an interview with the "Kronenzeitung" that he "went himself" ).
