Bernhard "Bernie" Englbrecht (born February 16, 1958 in Landshut ) is a German ice hockey coach who was a goalkeeper in his playing career.

Player career

Englbrecht began his professional career in 1975 at EV Landshut after he had gone through the youth teams there. He was selected by the Atlanta Flames in round 12 in round 12 of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft and was the first player born and trained in Germany to be drafted by an NHL team.

In 1983 he became German champion with EV Landshut . In the same year he completed a trial training with the NHL team Calgary Flames .

Englbrecht guarded the goal of the German national team 83 times , u. a. at three A World Championships and two Olympic Games. For Landshut, he played a total of 646 games between 1975 and 1993 . In the 1986/87 season he played for SC Riessersee. Further stations in his career: Essen, the Nürnberg Ice Tigers and Erding , where he ended his active career in 2000.

After the end of his playing career, he became junior coordinator at EV Landshut before taking on the coaching job there in 2001. After the 2004/05 season , the contract was no longer extended due to "signs of wear and tear". His successor was Daniel Naud . He also looked after the German national ice hockey team together with Ernst Höfner as an assistant coach until May 22, 2005 .

In the 2005/06 season he was coach of the Kassel Huskies in the DEL until January 10, 2006 . He was succeeded by Stéphane Richer . For the 2006/07 season he became Hans Zach's assistant coach at the Hanover Scorpions .

In the 2007/2008 season he tried his hand at coaching the second division club EHC Munich , but was dismissed after nine match days on October 9, 2007 due to his "behavior that was harmful to the club". In a newspaper interview he criticized the players and the club's top management.

On May 20, 2008 he was presented at a press conference as the new coach of Deggendorf Fire for the 2008/2009 major league season . Already after 22 match days they parted ways on November 27th by mutual agreement.

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season , Englbrecht took over the post of goalkeeping coach for the Straubing Tigers DEL team , and as of January 31, 2011 that of the second assistant coach. Until the end of the 2014/15 season he was assistant coach of the first division team, during which time he worked with the coaches Dan Ratushny , Rob Wilson and Larry Mitchell and temporarily looked after the team as an interim coach.

Between December 2015 and January 2017 he was again in charge of EV Landshut as head coach.
