On July 20, 2011, insolvency proceedings were opened against the association's assets. However, the club continues to participate in the game operations in the ice hockey league.

In addition to the senior area, the club includes the youth and women's ice hockey departments. The Moskitos teams play their home games in the 3850-seat Essen-West ice rink . The club colors are green and purple.

history

Early years at the Essen RSC (1935 to 1968)

In 1959, the Essen roller and ice skating club reached the championship in the state league of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1936 , but did not qualify for the second-rate league . From the 1961/62 season , the club took part in the group league , the then third-highest division and later regional league . In 1966 , the ERSC rose to the league for the first time, but where the team was withdrawn from the game after the preliminary round and before the start of the qualifying round.

ERV, Essener SC and EHC Essen (1968 to 1983)

In 1972 , the successor club ERV Essen was able to move up into the Regionalliga Nord and was classified in the Oberliga Nord in 1973 when the 2nd Bundesliga was introduced . In 1975 the club was withdrawn from gaming operations. As a successor, the Essener SC took the place in the league, but before this was also dissolved.

In the 1976/1977 season , the Essen ice hockey club finally took part in the Oberliga Nord and was runner-up there straight away, but failed in the relegation games to the 2nd Bundesliga at SG Nuremberg . In the following season , the EHC was finally able to move up to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 1981/82 season , the club, which had previously only been able to hold the class by dividing the league into a north and a south group, won the championship of the 2nd Bundesliga. In the following year, however, the club had to withdraw from the game operations due to ongoing economic problems.

Bundesliga and third division: EHC Essen-West (1983 to 1994)

In the summer of 1983 the club was re-established as EHC Essen-West and continued to play in the 2nd Bundesliga . There, the team made it to the ice hockey Bundesliga in the first year of the game , from which they were relegated after only one year and were even passed on to the Oberliga Nord in the following season . After the immediate return to the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1986/87 season , the club belonged to this division until the end of the game in 1994 .

Promotion to the DEL and renewed insolvency (1994 to 2002)

When the teams were redistributed when the German Ice Hockey League was introduced in 1994, the Essen Youth Ice Hockey Club was divided into the 2nd Northern League , from where it was promoted to the 1st Northern League in the first year . The ice sports club Moskitos Essen took over the place of the Essen Youth EC in the first division north in the 1995/96 season and finally became a founding member of the new second division in 1998 . As the second division champion in 1999 , the club made it into the DEL and then outsourced its professional team to ESC Moskitos Essen Trendsport GmbH .

After persistent sporting failures and economic problems, insolvency proceedings were opened over the GmbH at the end of the 2001/02 season , whereupon it was excluded from the German Ice Hockey League. The ESC Mosquitos Essen, which in three years had twice finished last and once third from last place in the top professional game class, continued to play in the fourth-class regional league North Rhine-Westphalia after waiving the possible participation in the 2nd Bundesliga .

New start and return to the parent club (since 2002)

After the sporting promotion in the season 2002/03 in the league, succeeded another year later the promotion in the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga. The mosquitoes ended the unsuccessful 2005/06 season with debt again, but this time bankruptcy was prevented. Sponsors and friends of the association founded a "rescue company" whose sole purpose was to take over and pay off the arrears.

In the 2006/07 season the mosquitoes could only convince in terms of sport. The aim was to prevent the athletic decline. The team even reached the play-offs, but failed in the first round in four games against the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg . In addition, the Mosquitos Essen made Tyson Mulocks 101 points and 50 goals the best scorer and best scorer in the league. With 51 assists each , Mulock and Conny Strömberg also became the best assists in the 2nd Bundesliga. Financially, however, losses had to be recorded again due to the lack of audience growth.

A press release was issued on February 24, 2008, through which it became known that the mosquitoes had 300,000 euros in debt at the time and that bankruptcy was threatened. The city of Essen then declared that it could not offer any help. Three days later, the board announced in a public press conference that an anonymous donor had made the sum of 100,000 euros available. An entrepreneur from Mülheim donated another 10,000 euros so that the final amount of 40,000 euros could be repaid.

In terms of sport, at the end of the preliminary round there was sixth place in the table and thus reaching the play-offs. In addition, with Martin Bartek , a player was again the Moskitos top scorer of the league. The play-offs again brought the end of the quarter-finals, this time against the Heilbronner Falken . Despite two away wins, the series was lost 4-2 because the mosquitoes couldn't win a home game. As a consequence of this season, the club separated by mutual agreement from coach Jari Pasanen and assistant coach Anton Raubal , although they still had a contract until 2010. Pasanen and Raubal switched to SERC Wild Wings together .

On April 15, 2008, the application was made to open insolvency proceedings for Spielbetriebs GmbH & Co, KG. The reasons given at a press conference at which the coach for the coming season should actually be presented were sponsors who, contrary to expectations, did not want to increase their commitment. The saving donation of 100,000 euros announced in February also only turned out to be a new loan, which was confirmed by Frank Dittmann, second chairman of the association and managing director of the GmbH.

For the 2008/09 season , the mosquitoes waived an insolvency-related downgrade of the first team to the league. Instead, the amateur team that had made it to the regional league became the first team. After a third place in the main round, the mosquitoes finished the promotion round to the league in fifth, so that the play-offs were just missed. Over the entire season, the mosquitoes reached an average of 693 spectators.

For the 2009/10 season , the mosquitoes strengthened their team with the aim of achieving promotion to the top division . As coach of the team Juris Kruminsch was replaced by Ulrich Egen and Larry Suarez during the season . In the main round, the mosquitoes came second behind the Duisburg foxes . In the championship round you could then place yourself at the top. After two 2-0 victories in the series of pre-play-offs against Ratinger Ice Aliens and the play-off semi-final against Harzer Wölfe Braunlage , the derby series against Duisburg came in the final. In the decisive third game, after a 3-2 victory, the mosquitoes became champions in the Regionalliga West / Southwest and North and were promoted to the newly structured Oberliga West . On July 20, 2011, bankruptcy proceedings were opened against the assets of the ESC Moskitos Essen eV association. Both the seniors and the youth department continued to play independently.

From August 2011 Michael Rumrich worked as a manager at Moskitos. From the 2011/12 season he ran the business there, in close cooperation with the insolvency administrator and the appointed board member. The coach in the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 seasons (until his leave of absence on December 10, 2013) was Markus Berwanger. From December 2013 Michael Rumrich as well as the previous intern Marc Dlugas led the training. At the meeting of creditors scheduled for October 2014 as part of the association's insolvency proceedings, the submitted insolvency plan for the association was accepted. On April 10, 2014, Frank Gentges was signed as the new head coach. The planned bankruptcy was successfully ended on March 31, 2015 and the association has since been run again by the newly elected board.

In July 2015, Wohnbau EG Essen bought the naming rights of the first team, which was then renamed ESC Wohnbau Moskitos . For the 2015/16 season, the mosquitoes switched from the LEV-managed Oberliga-West to the Oberliga-Nord, which is part of the DEB. Through cooperation with the Düsseldorfer EG and the EC Bad Nauheim , the sporting management succeeded in putting together a successful team.

Venue

The Essen-West ice rink before a game of mosquitoes

Mosquitos Essen play their home games in the Essen-West ice rink, which can hold around 3,850 spectators. The stadium is a typical ice rink and its design is similar to the halls in Iserlohn , Duisburg and Herne.
