The 1994/95 season of the 2nd ice hockey league was the first season of the league, which was introduced as the new third highest division in the course of the establishment of the German ice hockey league and was played in two seasons in the first season. The master Grefrather EV failed in the promotion round to the first division , instead the ETC Crimmitschau , the Moskitos Essen , the Iserlohner EC and the EHC Salzgitter qualified for the second division.

The Herner EV had to be relegated to the regional league, the EC Stuttgart was allowed to stay in the 2nd league south despite being relegated to the sport, as all points were deducted from EV Dingolfing due to a pass scandal and the club was classified in the Bavarian regional league.

In both the north and south groups , a main round was played, in which 16 teams started in the south and 14 teams in the north. The mode corresponded to a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams in its group.

At the end of the main round, the participants in places 1 to 8 in group South 8 took part in the promotion round to the 1st League South , which was played in two groups, while the other participants took part in the relegation round.

In the group north , at the end of the main round, the participants in place 1 with 8 should have taken part in the promotion round to the 1st division north . Since the sixth-placed Limburger EG preferred to take part in the promotion round to the 2nd division north, the ninth, Eintracht Braunschweig , moved up to the promotion round to the 1st division.

The two leaders in the group North and South also contested the final for the championship of the 2nd division.
