The Regionalliga 1971/72 was the seventh season of the third highest German ice hockey league under this name. As in the previous year, the league was played in three regional groups, north, south-west and south. The champion was Duisburger SC , which was founded last year and rose to the top league together with Eintracht Frankfurt and SG EHC Stuttgart .

The teams were divided into three regional groups. These each played a single round. Then places 1 to 2 of the three groups played the final round to determine the master and three direct climbers in the ice hockey league 1972/73 . Second teams could not qualify for the first time for the finals.

In the Regionalliga Süd 1972/73 , the first two of the Bayern League could rise. The regional leagues north and south-west were open to interested teams.

Attendees

In the north group, the second team from the Berlin ice skating club took part, which was created through the merger of the league teams of Berlin FC Preussen and the Berlin ice skating club. Also new was the 1b of the Krefelder EV, which was created by the dissolution of the Bundesliga team of the Preussen Krefeld .

Eintracht Frankfurt had withdrawn from the Oberliga in the Regionalliga Süd-West for financial reasons. The ERC Freiburg withdrew from the regional league. The EHC Stuttgart and the Stuttgart ERC started together as SG EHC Stuttgart . Instead of the team from HC Zweibrücken from the previous season , Zweibrücker EG took part in the league.

In the group south the TSV Peißenberg as champion of the Bavarian League and the VER Selb as the champion of the fifth-class Bavarian State League rose. Selb, who voluntarily withdrew from the Regionalliga in 1970, had skipped the Bayernliga.

A total of 22 teams took part in the regional league:
