The 1971/72 season of the ice hockey league was the 14th season of the league as the second highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga . The master Berlin ice-skating club as well as the second-placed EV Rosenheim , who benefited from the withdrawal of Preussen Krefeld from the Bundesliga, rose directly to the top division, which was increased to ten teams. Since the Düsseldorfer EG 1b withdrew prematurely from the game operation, there was no athletically determined relegation in the regional league , from which the Duisburger SC , Eintracht Frankfurt and the EHC Stuttgart rose.

The champion rose directly to the Bundesliga , while the last placed had to relegate to the corresponding group of the regional league. With Preussen Krefeld's withdrawal from the Bundesliga, the runner-up also rose directly to the top division, while the cessation of game operations in Düsseldorf EG 1b meant that no further relegated team was available.
