The 1959/60 season of the ice hockey league was the second season of the league as the second highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga .

The 1960 league champions, TuS Eintracht Dortmund , won the relegation against the last team in the Bundesliga, ESV Kaufbeuren, and thus rose to the top division. The only relegated team was ERV Ravensburg , who was replaced by ERC Sonthofen , champion of the Bavarian regional league and winner of the promotion round.

The league had been increased from eight to ten teams. In addition, the Bundesliga relegated EG Weßling-Starnberg had dissolved his team. As a result, the athletic relegated Kölner EK remained in the league and next to the winner of the promotion round EV Landsberg, after the EG Brandenburg - Prussia Berlin had renounced, the ERV Ravensburg (champions of the Württemberg regional league, second promotion round south) and the HG Nuremberg (second regional league Bavaria). The HG Nürnberg took part in a syndicate with the club am Marienberg Nürnberg as SG Nürnberg.

As in the previous year, the ten teams played a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams. At the end of the season, the league champions had the chance to move up to the top division in a relegation series against the bottom of the Bundesliga. The last placed was relegated directly.
