The 2009/10 season was the twelfth season since the establishment of the new 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga and began in September 2009. 14 clubs took part in the league organized by the ice hockey game operating company. The champions became the EHC Munich, which was victorious in the play-off final in three games against the main round winner Schwenninger Wild Wings .

New in the league were the promoted Hanover Indians and ESV Kaufbeuren . The master Bietigheim Steelers waived a license application for the DEL. The Tölzer Löwen were no longer represented in the league and were forced to relegate to the league after filing for bankruptcy. After the licensing process for this season, the Eispiraten Crimmitschau was initially not granted a license, but the club was subsequently able to meet the requirements for participation in the game. A little later, the Dresdner Eislöwen were deducted 8 points for licensing violations.

The league played a double round with 14 teams (52 games per club). As in the DEL , pre-play-offs were played, that is, the first six teams of the double round qualified directly for the play-offs, the clubs in places 7-10 played two more in best-of-three mode Play-off participants from. The winner of the play-offs became champions of the second Bundesliga and was able to apply for a license for the DEL 2010/11 . The teams in places 11-14 played a relegated team in the best-of-seven play-downs.
Player licenses
A maximum of 15 field players with a German player license and born before January 1, 1986 or without a German player license per game were allowed to be listed on the score sheet (Ü23 rule). A maximum of 6 players without a German player license may be listed on the score sheet, but an unlimited number of players without a German player license could be signed by the transfer deadline (January 31, 2010). For players who are eligible to play for a selection of the DEB and who were born on or after January 1, 1986, a one-time, non-changeable funding license agreement could be concluded between a team in the Oberliga and the 2nd Bundesliga (ESBG funding license). For players who were eligible to play for a selection of the DEB and were born on or after January 1, 1984, a funding license agreement could be concluded between a team from the DEL and the 2nd Bundesliga (DEL funding license).
Broadcast on television
The DSF showed a magazine about the 2nd Bundesliga at different times over the weekend. Up to four Friday games were summarized and background reports were broadcast.

A team was awarded three points for a win after regular time; if the game was a draw after 60 minutes, both teams received one point. An additional point was credited to the winner of the five-minute extension or after a necessary penalty shoot-out. If a team lost in regular time, it received no points.

Pre-play-off
The pre-play-offs took place in best of three mode. The Lausitzer Füchse prevailed with 2-1 victories against the Dresdner Eislöwen. The ESV Kaufbeuren moved into the quarter-finals after 2-0 wins against SC Riessersee. The games took place on March 16, March 19 and March 21. instead of.

final
The final was held in best-of-five mode. The game days were scheduled for April 23rd, 25th and 27th. The EHC Munich won the final and was thus champions of the 2nd Bundesliga. The Munich team thus fulfilled the sporting conditions for participation in the licensing procedure for the DEL 2010/11 . During the licensing, the documents for the DEL guarantee were not submitted on time, so that only a vote by the DEL shareholders decided on promotion or remaining in the second division in favor of the Munich team.

Play-downs
The play-downs took place in best-of-seven mode: the team that won four first remained in the league. The first round games took place on March 16, 19, 21, 23 and 26. The losers in the first round also played the relegated among themselves in a best-of-seven series. The game days were scheduled for April 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th. The other dates were obsolete. Due to the withdrawal of the license from SC Riessersee, the Wölfe Freiburg remained in the 2nd Bundesliga despite the sporting relegation.
