The 2020/21 season will be the eighth season of the second highest German ice hockey league under the name DEL2 . For the first time, a sporty climber in the German Ice Hockey League is possible.

The season should take place on October 2nd, 2020. Due to official regulations, the start date has been postponed to November 6th. The final will take place in spring 2021. The game operations are organized by the ESBG .

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic , the DEL2, together with the DEL and the DEB , presented a hygiene concept on July 15, which describes the conditions under which they want to resume gaming.

14 teams take part in the league. Since the pre-season game operations were canceled on March 10, 2020 due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic , there was no DEL2 champions, no relegated team and no promoted team from the league in 2020. Thirteen of the clubs that qualified as athletes received the license, the Bietigheim Steelers were only granted the license after a settlement before the DEL arbitration tribunal.

The 14 teams play a double round (52 games each). The first six qualify directly for the play-off quarter-finals. The teams in positions 7 to 10 play two more participants in the pre-play-offs. The teams in places 11 to 14 play a relegated player in the upper league in play-downs .

For the first time since 2006, a relegated person is played out in the DEL, so that the master of the DEL2 can advance to the DEL after an economic examination. The Löwen Frankfurt, the EC Kassel Huskies and the Bietigheim Steelers have applied for this.
