It was outsourced in 2010 as the successor to the Frankfurt Lions from the Young Lions Frankfurt (now Löwen Frankfurt Nachwuchs eV). Löwen Frankfurt Eishockey Betriebs GmbH has two shareholders, Stefan Krämer and Andreas Stracke, with Stefan Krämer being the sole managing director. The coach is Olli Salo , and Franz-David Fritzmeier is the sports director .

history

Ice hockey has been played in Frankfurt since at least the 1930s. In 1959, the Eintracht Frankfurt ice hockey department was founded. After their dissolution, the Frankfurt ESC "Die Löwen" was founded. On March 25, 1994 the Frankfurt Lions Eishockey GmbH was founded to introduce the professional league German Ice Hockey League . In the summer of 2010, the Frankfurt Lions had to file for bankruptcy and were not granted a license for the 2010/11 season. The Lions' parent club, the Young Lions Frankfurt, previously had an amateur team in the Regionalliga West and outsourced it to a gaming company under the name Löwen Frankfurt. Two former Lions players, Michael Bresagk and Ilja Vorobjew, were involved as shareholders . On December 12, 2010, the Löwen Frankfurt presented their new logo and new jerseys. Since then, a banner has been hanging under the roof of the ice rink on Ratsweg to commemorate this event.

With a fifth place in the championship round, the Lions did not qualify for the further group phase in the battle for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2011/12 season of the Oberliga West. In the consolation round against the Hammer Eisbären , the lions missed qualifying for the DEB Cup . In the 2012/13 season, the Lions made it into the playoffs for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. There they failed in the semifinals in five games against the Kassel Huskies. A year later, together with the Kassel Huskies, they were promoted to the DEL2, which was founded in 2013/14 and increased from twelve to 14 clubs.

On September 10, 2016 the Lions lost 4-5 in extra time in the Commerzbank-Arena with the derby against the EC Kassel Huskies, the first DEL2 Summer Game and the season opener in front of 30,000 spectators.

On April 25, 2017, the Lions won the final series against the Bietigheim Steelers with 4: 2 victories and thus became champions of the DEL2 2016/17 . This was preceded by two sweeps in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the play-offs.

On December 21, 2017, Franz-David Fritzmeier replaced Rich Chernomaz as sports director. After the Löwen lost the first two games in the playoff quarter-finals against Kassel, coach Paul Gardner was released, and sports director Fritzmeier took over the position. Gardner had led the Lions to the DEL2 championship title in the previous year, the main round of the 2017/18 season had been completed under his leadership as third in the table.

For the 2018/19 season, the Finn Matti Tiilikainen took over the coaching office in Frankfurt, Fritzmeier again took care of his duties as sports director. The lions finished the main round as first in the table. In the subsequent play-offs they reached the final, in which they were defeated by the Ravensburg Towerstars with 2: 4 defeats . The Lions also finished the main round of the 2019/20 season after a weaker start to the season and a strong final spurt as first in the table.

The Lions finished the 2019/20 season as the main round champions. The season was canceled after the pre-play-offs due to the COVID-19 pandemic , there were no play-offs .

For the 2020/2021 season, Olli Salo took over as coach from Matti Tiilikainen.

Ice rink in Frankfurt am Main

The ice rink on Ratsweg was opened on December 19, 1981 and has long been considered one of the most modern halls of its kind in Germany. In addition to the main ice rink the size of an ice hockey rink, which is surrounded by 7,000 spectator places, including around 3,500 seats and 3,500 standing places, the facility has a smaller, closed ice rink and a large 400 m long outer ring. Another ice hockey rink, covered by a tent roof, will be converted into tennis courts in summer. The “Young Lions” also play their home games in the ice rink.

The Frankfurt city council also discussed the construction of a modern multifunctional hall for a long time. One possible project was to build an arena with a capacity of 13,000 in Offenbach's Kaiserlei district , which was to become the new home of the Frankfurt Lions and the Frankfurt Skyliners . An offer from the French investor Lagano should have been submitted to the responsible municipal submission office by May 11, 2020, but the latter let the deadline pass.

In June 2019 it was announced that a Canadian group of investors was planning to build a multi-purpose arena with a capacity of up to 23,000 spectators near Frankfurt Airport . In August 2019, those responsible at Löwen Frankfurt signed a pre-lease agreement for the use of the arena.

  • Germany-Canada Jason Young - wore jersey number # 28 from 2003 until retired in 2010, and was Lions captain from 2004 to 2009.
