Roope Ranta (born May 23, 1988 in Helsinki , Finland ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been playing for the Löwen Frankfurt in the DEL2 since 2019 .

Career

Junior time and career start with the Espoo Blues

Roope Ranta learned to play ice hockey at Helsingfors IFK , alongside Jokerit , the most famous ice hockey club in his native Helsinki. In his junior years he was signed by the Espoo Blues , a team which at that time played in the highest Finnish ice hockey league SM-liiga , for their U20 team. Even after his junior years he played for the Blues until 2012 and came to 78 appearances in the SM-liiga. During this time, Ranta was temporarily loaned to the clubs Kiekko-Vantaa and Jokipojat , which were active in the Mestis , the second highest Finnish ice hockey league. For Kiekko he played the entire 2008/09 season and was the second best scorer of his team, at Jokipojat he was loaned out the following season and was able to contribute 21 points to the team's championship win this season in his 23 missions.

Successes in Finland's 2nd division - first experiences abroad

For Jokipojat he also played the first season 2012/13 after his time with the Blues and was the best scorer of his team this season and the best assists of the Mestis with 34 assists. In the following season he moved to the league competitor HC Keski-Uusimaa , where he was again the best scorer of the team at the end of the season.

Since HC Keski ceased playing at the end of the 2013/14 season, Roope moved abroad for the first time in his career and began the 2014/15 season in the second Russian league, the Wysschaja Hockey League , with Sputnik Nizhny Tagil . During the season he moved to the highest Italian ice hockey league Serie A for SV Kaltern Rothoblaas . At the end of the season he returned to Finland and played for Lempälään Kisa in de Mestis, where he scored most of his team's goals in the play-offs. In the next 2015/16 season he continued to play in the Mestis, this time for Mikkeli Jukurit's team, which had been very successful in recent seasons . The team from the Finnish lake region of Savo was able to win the championship in the Mestis this season, with Ranta being chosen as the second best scorer of his team behind Oula Palve, the most successful player in the Mestis in the play-offs and in the league's all-star team.

Change to Germany in the DEL2

Despite his good season record, he did not receive a new contract offer from Jukurit and switched to the second highest German ice hockey league DEL2 for the Lausitzer Füchsen in the 2016/17 season . At the traditional Saxon club, he received a fixed-term contract for two months and was initially scheduled to replace the foreign contingent players Jeff Hayes and Jakub Svoboda who were injured in the pre-season . After he was able to score 22 points (9 goals) in his 15 league appearances for the Füchse, Roope also aroused the interest of the league competition and was signed by SC Riessersee in November 2016 . He was also able to score 36 points (18 goals) in 40 games in Upper Bavaria , making him the club's second-best goalscorer behind Andreas Driendl and fourth-best scorer in the DEL2 main round of the 2016/17 season with 57 points. Nevertheless, the Finn was not only rated positively after the season, as he no longer confirmed his performance at the end of the season. For sporting and financial reasons, it was not possible to agree on a new contract with the SCR . In the 2017/18 season, Ranta first moved to what he believed to be the more powerful second Swedish league at IK Oskarshamn . However, he had difficulties adjusting to the other style of play in this league, got only a little ice time (11 games - 4 assists) and was hired again in November 2017 with the Lausitzer Füchsen in the DEL2. In the Lausitz he could achieve 54 points in 43 season stakes and moved to season 2018/19 for Liga rivals Heilbronner Falken . In Heilbronn he was the player with the best points in the main round (79 points), but missed the play-offs with the Falken and switched to the Löwen Frankfurt for the 2019/20 season .
