The sports club Riessersee is a German sports club from Garmisch-Partenkirchen , which is particularly well-known for its ice hockey department , which was German champion ten times between 1927 and 1981. Furthermore, the bobsleigh and sled department produced several Olympic and world champions. The professional ice hockey team has been outsourced to SC Riessersee Eishockey Vermarktungs GmbH since 1995/96 . At the parent club, on the other hand, the junior team, the women's team and the amateur team are located. The teams of SC Riessersee play their home games in the Olympia-Eissport-Zentrum , which offers space for 7,000 spectators, the club colors are white and blue.

In the summer of 2004, the GmbH survived the insolvency proceedings for the second time after 2002 and - after its license withdrawal for the 2nd Bundesliga in December 2003 - was accepted into the top division . From the 2007/08 season , the SC Riessersee was again active in the 2nd Bundesliga, was then active in the Oberliga after a renewed license withdrawal in the 2010/11 season rose again to the 2nd Bundesliga (later DEL2 ) in the 2011/12 season .

history

Early years (1920 to 1945)

Venue in the first few years: The Riessersee .

The sports club Riessersee was founded on October 12, 1920 in the luxury hotel Riessersee . Initiators were Hansheinrich Kirchgeßner, Wilhelm von Hillern-Flensch - who was elected first chairman - and the owner of the hotel, Leonhard Buchwieser, who under the umbrella of the SC, the sports bobsleigh , ice hockey, ice skating, ice shooting, speed skating and dance as well as golf , Organized hockey and tennis. Buchwieser put all existing sports facilities around the Riessersee to the club and on February 10, 1922 the entry was made in the club register, in which the involved districts Garmisch and Partenkirchen were deliberately omitted in the club name. The club already had 87 members in its first year.

"As of January 1, 1921, the Rießersee sports club takes over all of the sports facilities, lanes and squares located on the Rießersee and on the Rießer slopes (northern slopes of the Kreuzeck area), their maintenance, recreation, and the protectorate of the sporting, technical and social events. "

- Garmisch-Partenkirchener Generalanzeiger, 41st year from January 1, 1921

From Franz roundabout and Karl Neustift many players of was on 23 December 1923 after crossing MTV Munich in 1879 and the MEV 1883 Munich founded the Hockey Department. The first game against MTV Munich took place on January 13th of the following year, from which the Zugspitze team emerged victorious 2-1 and won a donated trophy. After the dissolution of the ice hockey department of MTV and the entry of the players to the SCR, the team competed for the first time in international tournaments and for the German championship in 1924. The Upper Bavarians were national runners-up behind the Berlin ice-skating club .

In addition to the parallel Bavarian championships and their win by the second team, the German championship on the Kobelhang in Füssen took place on February 6, 1927 , in which SC Riessersee defeated SC Charlottenburg 2-1 in the final and thus won the first German championship title . In December 1927, the SCR team took part in the Spengler Cup in Davos , where they met in the preliminary round against the University of Oxford (1: 0) and the Berlin ice skating club (1: 2 a.d.) and competed for the game 3rd place qualified. There she lost to the team from Cambridge with 1: 2.

At the same time, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen team made up a large part of the national selection players who took part in the Olympic and world championships. In the further course of the German championship, the team took second place in 1928 and a year later, behind the then "permanent rivals" Berlin ice skating club. The year 1930 represented the temporary high point of German ice hockey. After winning the Bavarian championship over EV Füssen, four players from SC Riessersee represented the German selection, which won the European championship and the vice world championship. The national championship was held in 1932 on the Riessersee, but could not be completed due to the weather conditions. The result of the "small final" in the game for third place between the SCR and the Munich Ice Skating Club is unknown.

In the Olympic year of 1932 - six local players won the bronze medal with the German national team at the 1932 Olympic Games in Lake Placid - the team was reinforced again by players from MEV 1883 Munich and became runner-up. With the opening of an artificial ice rink in Munich, the players now had a regular training facility at their disposal. Due to the national successes and the positive reputation of the club, on December 31, 1931, as part of the “Tour of Europe”, there was a friendly encounter with the Edmonton Superiors, a successful team from Canada at the time . In the final of the German championship, BSC and SC Riessersee faced each other again on the Glaspalast-Bahn in Munich. The game ended 2-1 after extra time, but was canceled due to a goal judge's error and could not be repeated because of the onset of the thaw. Only at the beginning of the following season was there a catch-up game in the newly built Prinzregentenstadion in Munich, which the Berliners won 1-0 and the Upper Bavarians were runner-up for the fifth time. This was repeated the following year, when the team had to admit defeat to SC Brandenburg-Berlin again in the final .

In December 1934, ice hockey games were held in the Olympic Stadium for the first time . The first opponent here was HC Milano . In the German championship, the SCR took first place after the preliminary round and defeated EV Füssen with 2-1 on February 17, 1935, becoming German champions for the second time. After the Bavarian championship title in 1937, two further German runner-up titles , the club won the championship again in 1938 in the domestic Olympic Stadium. In the following year, the SCR was disqualified by Gauführer XVI of the NSRL for unsporting behavior on the occasion of a game at the three-city competition Berlin-Munich-Vienna and after a first place after the preliminary round was not allowed to participate in the final round in the Berlin Sportpalast . Despite the start of the war, sporting competitions continued to be held in the winter of 1939/40. In addition to the "5. International Winter Sports Week ”, the Garmisch-Partenkircheners achieved third place in the final round of the German championship. Under the later Reich coach Bobby Bell , the SCR was named the best German club team for the fourth time in 1941, after the team first won the Bavarian Championship. In the following years, the final rounds were only played up to the semi-finals, as many teams had to struggle with line-up difficulties due to the war events and drafts. On August 4, 1944, the National Socialist Reich Association for Physical Exercise finally announced that the Reich Championships in German sports would be discontinued and that no more sports competitions would be held in the last months of the war. This meant that ice hockey also came to a standstill under the Zugspitze .

Building on earlier successes (1945 to 1982)

After the Second World War , there was an initially "Inofficial German Championship" in November 1946, in which the SC Riessersee participated. Gustav Jaenecke came to the SCR for the regular season , who led the team to the first German championship after the war in 1947, when the final against the Berlin ice-skating club was won 10-1. A year later the championship could be won again. This season two teams from Garmisch-Partenkirchen competed, the SCR Munich and the SCR Garmisch-Partenkirchen , which also played the season opener. In the summer of 1948 the single-track league was founded and in the second league season both the senior and junior teams won the German championship. In a pre-decisive game of the 1951/52 season , the SCR first won the game against rivals Preussen Krefeld 6-5, but the Rhinelander protested because of an irregular hit and there had to be a playoff between the two teams at the end of the season, which the Krefelds ultimately won.

Due to the good youth work of the club, numerous talents switched to competing clubs in the coming seasons and thus weakened their own team. The SCR did not win the next championship until 1960 , after having been beaten several times in previous years to the then dominant EV Füssen . In 1958/59 the ice hockey Bundesliga was founded, of which Riessersee was one of the founding members. After the preliminary round, the team was in third place, but only came fourth in the final round. After the season, the top performer and the "living legend" Toni Biersack moved to SG Nürnberg after twelve years of membership in the club . In 1968 the team reached the German second division championship (Oberliga).

It was not until the 1977/78 season that the team became German champions again, when the SCR, after finishing second in the main round, was able to overtake the previously leading Cologne EC . In the 1978/79 season, the SCR was German runner-up (German record) for the 15th time . The so far last championship title of Garmisch-Partenkirchen followed in 1981 . In a tight play-off final series, the SC Riessersee under coach Jano Starsi beat the Düsseldorfer EG with 2-1 wins.

Economic problems and decline (1982 to 1994)

In 1982 the professional team was split off from the parent club for economic reasons, after five more Bundesliga years, in which the class was only secured three times in the relegation round, in 1987 they were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . As a founding member of the upper and Bundesliga, the SCR was always represented in the top division with the exception of the 1967/68 season up to its relegation in 1987. Due to the financial problems caused by relegation, the club finally had to file for bankruptcy, so that the first team participated in the second division for three years under bankruptcy administration and the addition of iK . In 1993 the league was finally missed in the 2nd Bundesliga, so that the SC Riessersee had to compete in the league the following year .

DEL and renewed insolvency (1994 to 1998)

When the leagues were redistributed with the introduction of the German Ice Hockey League in 1994 , SC Riessersee was re-classified in the second division, which has since been known as the " 1st League ". By the cessation of the game operation of the Maddogs Munich in December 1994 a place in the following DEL season became free. Since the athletically qualified EHC Freiburg as well as the successor ETC Timmendorfer Strand waived a possible admission, the SC Riessersee was able to move up to the DEL after the entrepreneur Thomas Fahlenbach, who joined SC Riessersee at the beginning of the season, bought the corresponding license .

Then the professional team under the leadership of the entrepreneur Thomas Fahlenbach was outsourced to the SC Riessersee Eishockey-Vermarktungsgesellschaft mbH for financial security , but the team had to withdraw from the DEL at the end of the season for economic reasons, as Fahlenbach had around 700,000 DM this season in the SC Riessersee invested, but left SC Riessersee in March 1996 due to a lack of recognition, which resulted in the coming economic problems. The team reached the play-off round of 16, but the economic situation due to Fahlenbach's exit was so bad that the GmbH had to go bankrupt for the first time in its history. In the following year , the SCR took part in the first league south, where he missed the play-offs in the first year of the game, but was able to win the "Alpine Cup" played between ninth and tenth place against ES Weißwasser .

Founding member of the 2nd Bundesliga (1998 to 2004)

In 1998 , SC Riessersee was a founding member of the new 2nd Bundesliga , which was initially played under the name of Bundesliga for one season . With the outsourcing of the organization of the league's game operations from the German Ice Hockey Federation to the ice hockey game operating company , the GmbH became an official licensee instead of the club. In 2002 the entrepreneur and self-made millionaire Horst Lasse (who played at SC Riessersee in his childhood) and his wife Sybil Danning joined the SC Riessersee as a supposed partner after being advertised by the then managing director. This intermezzo ended shortly after manager Peppi Heiß left in the spring of 2003, as the two were blinded by nominations and were not shareholders at all. In 2002 and 2003 to 2004 the GmbH had to contest insolvency proceedings again, both of which were successfully concluded. During this time the Kölner Haie became co-partners of the Spielbetriebs-GmbH. In terms of sport, the SCR reached the final of the second division championship in the 2002/03 season, but failed there because of the later DEL promoted Wölfe Freiburg .

New beginning, ascents and descents (2004–2018)

After filing for bankruptcy in 2004 and being rescued by Garmisch-Partenkirchen's mayor Thomas Schmid, the insolvency administrator Martin Prager and the new managing director Ralph Bader, the team was excluded from the second division, but was able to provide a budget for the following season in the major league, where the Relegation could only be secured in the relegation round. In the 2005/06 season , the SC Riessersee reached the play-offs, but failed there in the semi-finals at EV Ravensburg . In the summer of 2006, the sole shareholder of the Nürnberg Ice Tigers , Günther Hertel, took over the shares he had not yet held in the GmbH, which thus entered into a cooperation with the Ice Tigers.

During the 2006/07 season , the team managed to finish the first round and win the play-off quarter-finals against EC Peiting with 4-1 wins. In the decisive semi-final for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga, however, the team was again subject to EV Ravensburg . However, since Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg made it to the German Ice Hockey League by winning the second division championship, SC Riessersee was allowed to move up to the second division. Both in the 2007/08 season and in the 2008/09 season , the SCR reached the play-offs and failed there in the quarter-finals.

In spring 2009, the GmbH only narrowly escaped another insolvency, which was averted by a donation from the entrepreneur Marcus Wolsdorf. Due to the financial situation, the club was refused the license for the 2nd Bundesliga in early June 2010 and he was relegated to the Oberliga Süd .

In the spring of 2011, SC Riessersee won the final series of the Oberliga against EHC Klostersee in just two games and thus won their first title since 1981. Thanks to the sporting promotion, the course was also set financially for the 2nd Bundesliga. The necessary financial resources were raised at the last minute. Hartelt, who has been the assistant coach since 2006, announced his retirement with the rise of SC Riessersee.

At the beginning of August, the former defender Andreas Raubal took over the vacant position of assistant coach, which was previously occupied by Hartelt. Thus Raubal was the fourth coach (after Jozef Golonka , Vladimír Dzurilla and Marcus Bleicher ) in the club's history, who played his last season at SC Riessersee and then hired as a coach at SC Riessersee behind the gang.

At the end of August 2011, Marcus Bleicher , master coach of the 2010/11 season , resigned from his coaching position with immediate effect after just one test match, as there were differences of opinion between coach and managing director Ralph Bader. The new coach was Zdeněk Trávníček .

On the penultimate game day in the relegation round, SC Riessersee was able to secure relegation in the 2nd Bundesliga early after a 2: 3 n. V. against ETC Crimmitschau . On April 26, 2012 it was announced that the contract of coach Zdeněk Trávníček will not be renewed. The reasons given were various differences that prompted managing director Ralph Bader to make this decision. On May 1st, Axel Kammerer was introduced as the new coach of SC Riessersee.

At the beginning of October 2012, managing director Ralph Bader tried to get locked out NHL players due to the lockout in the NHL . To this end, he made contact with player agent Steve Bartlett, father of former SC Riessersee striker Scott Bartlett , and was able to confirm a short time later that striker Matt D'Agostini from the St. Louis Blues and Rick DiPietro from the New York Islanders switch to SC Riessersee during the lockout.

In November 2012 you could also sign the Ottawa Senators striker Erik Condra , who played at EV Füssen , but wanted to collect match practice at a higher-class club at his own request.
Axel Kammerer was released from his coaching duties at the beginning of January 2013 after a relatively poor seasonal performance (9 wins and 22 defeats). Since no new coach could be signed, the coaching position was temporarily taken over by the former player and SC Riessersee coach Marcus Bleicher. After Bleicher jumped in for two games, the former Hanover Scorpions coach Toni Krinner took over the coaching position at SC Riessersee.

In summer 2013 the SC Riessersee celebrated its 90th anniversary. The King Ludwig Weissbier Cup was therefore held on the last weekend in August. In addition to SC Riessersee, participants were the Nürnberg Ice Tigers from Nürnberg, EHC Linz and ESV Kaufbeuren . The 2013/14 season was a lot more successful than the previous one, when the club was bottom of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga. Participation in the play-off round was secured at the beginning of February 2014. In addition, some contracts have already been extended during the current season. It all started with coach Toni Krinner , whose contract was extended by two years at the end of December 2013 up to and including the 2015/16 season. This was surprising as no coach had been in office for more than two years since Ján Starší (1979 to 1982). In addition, at the beginning of January 2014, despite some offers from the DEL, the contract with the talented striker Maximilian Kastner was extended by one year. In addition, in January 2014, the extension of Tim Regan's contract, the captain of the current DEL2 team, was announced. In the end, SC Riessersee took 6th place in the main round. In the playoff quarter-finals, the team was eliminated 1: 4 against the Bietigheim Steelers .

The SCR started the 2014/15 season again with an invitation tournament. This time the Düsseldorfer EG from the DEL , the Haie Innsbruck from the EBEL and the EV Landshut from the DEL2 were invited. The game for 3rd place was fought by SC Riessersee and EV Landshut, which the Landshut team could claim for themselves. The Haie Innsbruck won the final 4-2 against the Düsseldorfer EG. Nevertheless, the SCR started the season properly under the leadership of Toni Krinner and made a name for itself in the middle of the table. The first squad adjustments were not long in coming. The crowd favorite Morten Lie had to vacate his locker after 16 games and an unsatisfactory performance. He will be succeeded by David Brine . After only 63 days, however, this contract was also canceled and the turbulence in the SCR engine began. Because trainer Toni Krinner is also throwing out under the pretext of resigning from Brine. First of all, Krinner received more praise than criticism for this decision, also from SCR supporters. However, the tide turned when it became known that Krinner will in future be behind the gang at league rivals EV Landshut, even though he expressly wanted to take a break. Meanwhile, help comes from the Nürnberg Ice Tigers , who made their released coach Maurizio Mansi available to SC Riessersee . The Krinner controversy does not end there. The way in which Krinner left SC Riessersee made SCR manager Ralph Bader go to court and demand a transfer from EV Landshut. Since Landshut refused to pay the required € 12,500 transfer fee, the SCR obtained an injunction against Krinner in court, which prohibited him from any coaching or other activity at the EVL. The court ruled that Krinner's resignation from the SCR was invalid. A good four weeks later and probably also due to the court ruling, EV Landshut paid the required transfer fee and SC Riessersee terminated the contract with Toni Krinner. What remained was a somewhat insecure team, which scratched at a direct playoff participation, but could only qualify for the pre-playoffs. In the pre-playoffs, which were carried out in best-of-three mode , the SCR was then defeated by the Dresdner Eislöwen 2: 1. The season was over and shortly afterwards the first departures became known, including the expected departure of Maximilian Kastner , who moved to the DEL to join cooperation partner EHC Red Bull Munich .

The 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons ended with the SCR in ninth place in the table and eliminated in the pre-playoffs after three games.

Main round champion and withdrawal from DEL2 (since 2018)

Ralph Bader was dismissed without notice by the managing director of the sole shareholder of the SC Riessersee TAA Group in March 2017. The SCR was then reorganized. Tim Regan took over the new position as sports director. The sole shareholder invested around 1.5 million euros in Spielbetriebs GmbH by 2018. Therefore, a very good team could be put together for the 2017/18 season that won the main round and was ultimately runner-up in the DEL2. In mid-May 2018, Udo Weisenburger announced no further application for the DEL2, as the debt mountain of the GmbH had grown to 600,000 euros and DEL2 ice hockey in Garmisch-Partenkirchen could not be financed. A week later there was a timely application for a DEL2 participation but it failed because a creditor did not accept the desired haircut and the license terms of the DEL2 were violated, so that the license was not granted by the league. Finally, it was decided to apply for a license for the Oberliga Süd, for which, however, a successful plan insolvency on the part of the DEB was required. The application to open the procedure was submitted to the competent court in mid-July. A month later, the insolvency plan was accepted by the court and creditors, which means that SC Riessersee can participate in the preliminary round of the Oberliga Süd in the 2018/19 season .

Stadium and fans

Venue

Until 1936, the club played its games on the frozen Rießersee . The Olympic ice stadium was built for the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Today's ice sports center includes, in addition to the Olympic ice stadium, a second hall with an ice rink and a grandstand that can hold 670 spectators, there is also a curling hall with three lanes and an outdoor ice rink with a playing field for curlingers.

The construction of the center's main stadium, designed by Hanns Ostler and Theo Pabst (ice facility), was completed in just 106 working days in 1934, so that the purely open-air stadium with a capacity of 7,000 spectators was fully functional for the 1936 Olympic Games. The arena was modernized and expanded again as early as 1939.

The stadium was not completely roofed until 1964, based on a design by Franz Hart by the Frisch / Krupp-Altlach company. The reconstruction work at that time also included the reconstruction of the grandstands, so that the maximum capacity from 1964 was 10,500 seats.

Since the last renovation in 1994, when the entire south stand, which previously consisted of standing room, was converted into a seating stand, the stadium has seated 6,929 spectators.
