The 1987/88 season of the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey was the 15th season of the second highest German ice hockey division. At the end of the season, the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga south , EHC Freiburg , were promoted to the Bundesliga , while the north champions Krefelder EV failed in the relegation round. The Herner EV had to relegate to the league , and EC Kassel voluntarily withdrew from gaming.
After the bankruptcy of EHC 70 Munich , the EC Hedos Munich was the first team from the Bavarian capital to take part in the game. The former national player and multiple German champion Lorenz Funk replaced coach Martin Wild as coach of EC Bad Tölz during the season and finally went on the ice with his two sons Lorenz and Florian , while the future DEB defender Jörg Mayr was playing his debut season in Füssen . Also new to the league was the later championship and national coach, Hans Zach , who made his coaching debut at EC Ratingen and led him into the promotion round.
mode
As in the previous season , the league was two-pronged, with both seasons starting with ten teams each. First, a preliminary round was played in the form of a double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams in its group. The best four teams from both groups then took part in the relegation round to the Bundesliga . Since the Bundesliga club ECD Iserlohn had to file for bankruptcy, the fifth placed in the preliminary round north also qualified for the relegation round. Meanwhile, the remaining teams had to play in the relegation rounds in the north and south for their starting place in the league. The round was held in one group in the north and in two groups in the south.
