societies

Jörg Mayr learned to play ice hockey in his Bavarian homeland at EV Füssen . There the defensively strong defender played for many years in the various youth teams and later for two years in the professional team in the 2nd Bundesliga . For the 1989/90 season he decided to move to the 1st Bundesliga with the Kölner Haien. After his first year in the top German division, he had already established himself as a regular player and was voted the best young defender in the league.

After four more years, in which the left-handed shooter was twice runner-up with the Haien , he reached the final of the play-offs again with the KEC in the 1994/95 season . The Haie won this against EV Landshut in the decisive fifth game and Jörg Mayr won his first title. A year later he lost the final with the KEC against the Düsseldorfer EG . In the following years, Mayr suffered several injuries, most of which put him out of action in the crucial phases of the season. After losing his fourth final with the Haien in 2000, this time against the Munich Barons , he won his second championship two years later.

However, he could not intervene in the playoffs because he had broken his jaw at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City , in which he also lost several teeth. Because of this injury, he ended his active career after the season. The number 6 on his back , which he wore with the Haien for 13 years, has not been given to players by the KEC since then. In addition, a jersey of his hangs under the roof of the Lanxess Arena .
