In 2001 the International Ice Hockey Federation hosted the 65th Ice Hockey World Championships . A large number of tournaments in the various divisions in the men's, women's and junior division were held.

Mode changes

Compared to the previous year , there were significant changes in mode, especially in the B, C and D groups. First the names were changed. The A group is now only referred to as the World Championship, while the previous B group is now referred to as Division I and the C group as Division II.

These new designations apply to all ice hockey world championships, including the junior and women's area. In addition, the mode of delivery was changed in the two divisions. Both Division I and Division II play with twelve teams each. However, these do not meet in a single tournament, but are divided into two groups of six teams each. The two groups are played at different locations in the league system, with the respective group winner moving up to the next higher class and the bottom group moving down to the next lower class. So from now on there will be two promoters and two relegers for male seniors. There is no Division III this year.
