The tournaments at a glance

Men's World Cup

The 76th Men's Ice Hockey World Championship is jointly hosted by Finland ( Helsinki ) and Sweden ( Stockholm ). Originally the tournament was given to Finland; Sweden was clearly defeated by 35 to 64 votes in the vote on the award of the World Cup, which took place during the annual meeting of the World Ice Hockey Federation IIHF on May 11, 2007 in Moscow . At the IIHF annual meeting in 2009, IIHF, Finland and Sweden announced that the two countries will host the 2012 and 2013 tournaments together. This was the first time since 1930 that the World Cup was held in more than one country.

Originally, the Czech Republic ( Prague and Ostrava ), Denmark ( Copenhagen ) and Hungary ( Budapest and Székesfehérvár ) also applied to host the event, but withdrew their application before the vote. Finland last hosted the Ice Hockey World Championship in 2003 .

The world championship will be played with a new mode for the first time. The preliminary round is played in two rounds with eight teams each. The first four teams in each group qualify for the quarter-finals, the previous intermediate round is not applicable. The last of each group are relegated to Division I.

A new mode is also planned for the lower divisions. In these, the 12 teams are divided into a stronger group A and a weaker group B. A promotion to the next higher division is only possible from group A, accordingly there is promotion and relegation between group A and group B. The same rule also applies to the Junior World Championships.
