The 1980 Junior Ice Hockey World Championship was the fourth edition of the World Championship in the under-20 age group (U20) by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The A-World Championship took place from December 27, 1979 to January 2, 1980 in Helsinki , Finland . The Junior B World Championship was held from March 3 to 12 in Klagenfurt , Austria . A total of 16 teams took part, the USSR became world champions for the fourth time in a row.
The junior world championship was the only ice hockey world championship in 1980. For the first time there was no ice hockey world championship for men in an Olympic year , as two big tournaments in one year appeared to be too much of a burden for the players.
World Championship
The A group of the Junior World Championship was held in the Finnish capital Helsinki .
mode
Players under 20 years of age (U-20) were allowed. Eight teams took part in two groups of four teams each. The two best teams in each group qualified for the championship round. The four remaining teams played the only relegated team in the relegation round. In the championship and relegation round, the teams' games against their opponents were taken over from the preliminary round.
