The 44th ice hockey world championships of the U20 juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of the year 2020 in the age group of the under-20s (U20). A total of 42 national teams took part in the six tournaments of the top division and divisions I to III between December 9, 2019 and February 3, 2020 . As in the previous year, there was no qualification for Division III of the following year, but all the teams registered had been distributed to the divisions.

The team from Canada became world champions for the 18th time and prevailed 4-3 against the Russian team in the final . It was Canada’s third title in six years. The Switzerland finished in the top division in fifth place, the young German finished ninth and thus kept the class. Austria reached first place in Group A of Division I and thus rose again to the top division after ten years of abstinence.

Participants, venues and periods

mode

The ice hockey world championship was played in a total of six tournaments with different levels of participants. The top division played with ten teams, divisions I and II with twelve each and division III with eight participants.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six teams. Division III will play with eight participants, as it did two years ago. Both participants in the qualification of the previous year were accepted into Division III and the last actually relegated, the New Zealand team, remained in Division III.

The last placed in the relegation round rose from the top division to Group A of Division I. From the same, the first placed rose to the top division next year, while the sixth placed was relegated to Group B of Division I. In return, the winner of Division IB rose to Division IA. The last one from Division IB was also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with one promoted and relegated also applied to Division II A, II B and - as far as promotion was concerned - Division III. Whether teams from Division III have to be relegated depends on whether a qualifying tournament will be held again in 2020.

The top division of the U20 World Cup took place from December 26, 2019 to January 5, 2020 in the Czech cities of Ostrava and Třinec , which are in the east of the country. The game was played in the Ostravar Aréna (10,004 places), the home ground of HC Vítkovice from the Extraliga , as well as the Werk Arena , in which local rivals HC Oceláři Třinec play their home games, with 5,200 places. A total of 173,474 spectators attended the 31 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 5,595 per game.

Ten national teams took part in the tournament, playing in two groups of five teams each. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams at the 2019 World Cup according to the following key:

Group A Group B
FinlandFinland Finland (1) United StatesUnited States USA (2)
SwitzerlandSwitzerland Switzerland (4) RussiaRussia Russia (3)
SwedenSweden Sweden (5) CanadaCanada Canada (6)
SlovakiaSlovakia Slovakia (8) Czech RepublicCzech Republic Czech Republic (7)
KazakhstanKazakhstan Kazakhstan (9) GermanyGermany Germany (10)

The U20 team of Canada defeated Russia 4-3 in the final of the tournament and won their 18th U20 world championship. It was the Canadians' second title win in the past three years. That left Russia only in second place. The Swedish team won the game for third place against defending champions Finland 3-2. As the loser of the relegation against the German team, Kazakhstan was relegated to Group A of Division I, while Austria was promoted to the top division.

After the group matches - each team played four of them - the preliminary round, the first four in each group qualified for the quarter-finals, which, like the other rounds, were then played in the knockout system. The fifth of the group games contested a relegation according to the " best-of-three " mode and determined who was relegated to Group A of Division I.

The Group A tournament was held from January 6th to 12th, 2020 in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius . The games took place in the 2,500-seat Pramogų arena . A total of 7,303 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 486 per game. The Japanese team managed to return to Division I immediately with a 5-2 win on the last match day against Lithuania , which would have had a chance of promotion if it had won in regular time. The Serbian juniors were relegated immediately after the 2: 10 defeat in penultimate game against Japan. In the end, the decisive factors were the defeats on the first and second matchdays, when they lost to direct rivals Spain and Romania despite taking the lead.
