The 84th Men's Ice Hockey World Championships of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF should be the Ice Hockey World Championships of 2020 . The top division tournament with 16 national teams was to take place in Switzerland from May 8th to 24th, 2020 . Zurich and Prilly were planned as venues . On March 21, 2020, the tournament of the top division was finally canceled by the IIHF due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

The other tournaments of divisions I to IV should take place between March and May 2020 in Ljubljana , Katowice , Zagreb , Reykjavík , Kockelscheuer , Cape Town and Bishkek . Due to the coronavirus epidemic , the IIHF canceled all tournaments below the top division from mid-March. The division IV, which was created by the two newcomers to the World Cup, Malaysia and the Philippines, was initially set up with a new record number of 54 teams, but was canceled at short notice at the end of February 2020 due to the epidemic.

Participants, venues and periods

mode

In the top division, the four best teams in each group qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The total number of games is 64 games.

In Divisions I, II and III, the twelve teams in Division I and II as well as the ten teams in Division III are qualitatively divided into two groups of six teams or four in Group B of Division III. This is done on the basis of the final placements of the World Championships in 2019 . The newly introduced Division IV plays - like Group B of Division III - with four teams.

The last two of the two preliminary round groups are relegated from the top division to Division IA. For this reason, the two winners will be promoted to the top division next year. Belarus and Latvia are automatically qualified as hosts for the tournament of the Top Division 2021 . If one of the teams is relegated, only the winner of Division IA will be promoted. The sixth placed in Division IA is relegated to Division IB. In return, the winner of Division IB moves up to Division IA. Corresponding promotion and relegation regulations also apply in the other divisions.

Top division

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the tournament on March 21, 2020 was canceled by the IIHF.
