The Spodek is a multi-purpose hall in Katowice , Poland . Spodek ("saucer") is the popular name, officially the hall was called until 1997 Wojewódzka Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa w Katowicach ("Hall of the Voivodeship for Sports and Events in Katowice"). Today the hall operates officially under the name Spodek .
history
As early as 1955, when Katowice was called Stalinogród , the plan for a large event hall was being considered. In 1959 an architecture competition was held. Initially, the arena was to be built on the outskirts, on the site of the Silesian Central Park (Śląski Park Kultury i Wypoczynku, Wojewódzki Park Kultury i Wypoczynku) . The Voivodeship Council later decided to build the arena near the new city center, which is adjacent to the old town to the north.
Due to the new location, there was a delay in the execution of the project. The construction of the foundation had to be revised, as the new site had mountain damage and a coal seam ran in the northern part of the construction site at a depth of 26 m, which resulted in the site being less stable. Construction work began in 1964. The plans for two indoor swimming pools near this complex were not implemented for cost reasons.
In 1969 the ice rink next to the Spodek was inaugurated. The hall was finally completed in 1971.
The hall was designed by the architects Maciej Gintowt , Jerzy Hryniewiecki and Maciej Krasiński and the structural engineer Andrzej Żórawski .
In the early seventies, the DOKP high-rise was built right next to the Spodek .
In 2011 the facade was extensively renovated, whereby the asbestos-containing cladding had to be replaced. The renovation of the entire facility should be completed in 2013 and cost 30 million złoty .
