Budgie (band)
Budgie ( Engl. " Budgie ") is a 1968 British founded hard rock band from Cardiff , Wales . The group is known for their work together, for the epic song "Parents", for two tracks covered by Metallica , and for the cover art by Roger Dean . The band's most famous song in Germany was the covered song Baby Please Don't Go by Joe Williams . Ultimately, however, the band never became popular. The unique voice of Burke Shelley and the group's extraordinary heavy metal sound on the first three LPs were probably ahead of their time.
Band history
In the founding year 1968, the original line-up consisted of Burke Shelley (John Burke Shelley, born April 10, 1947 in Cardiff) on bass and vocals, Tony Bourge (Anthony Bourge, born November 23, 1948 in Cardiff) on guitar and vocals, and Ray Phillips ( Raymond Phillips, born March 1, 1945 in Tiger Bay) on drums.
Their untitled debut album was produced by the producer of Black Sabbath , Rodger Bain, and was released in 1971. The second album Squawk was released in 1972, their third album Never Turn Your Back On a Friend in 1973. Ray Philips then left the band and was joined by Pete Boot (Peter Charles Boot, born September 30, 1950 in West Bromwich) replaced on drums, with which the fourth album In for the Kill was recorded in 1974. The cover for this album was designed by Roger Dean . In 1975 a new drummer came again, Steve Williams. In the same year the fifth album was recorded, Bandolier . In 1978 Tony Bourge left the band, and John Thomas came on for him.
The tracks "Breadfan" from the third LP and "Crash Course In Brain Surgery" from the fourth LP were later covered by Metallica . The music from the 1978 album Impeckable was used in the film "J-Men Forever" (1979).
The band was counted to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal around 1980 and appeared as the main group at the Reading Festival . Budgie are also considered to be one of the first western hard rock bands to appear behind the Iron Curtain, as they played in Poland in 1982. In 1984 they opened for Ozzy Osbourne . In 1988 they temporarily stopped their performances in order to devote themselves to studio productions and other projects. John Thomas worked with Glenn Hughes on the CD 'Phenomena' .
After a while, Budgie got together again and appeared again sporadically, e.g. B. three times at the Festival La Semana Alegre in San Antonio , Texas , in 1995, 1996 and 2000 and as the main group at the "Welsh Legends of Rock Festival" 2001. In the following years, the band was again on extended tours, u. a. in England, USA, Sweden and Poland. In late 2006, a 35-concert tour of England was scheduled. A new studio album was under the working title Ears Pierced While You Wait in preparation, but was then released on November 7, 2006 under the title You're All Living In Cuckooland . In addition to the studio albums, there are numerous compilations and bootlegs as well as fan club releases.
The current line-up consists of Craig Goldy (guitar), Burke Shelley (bass, vocals) and Steve Williams (drums).
