Metallica is an American metal - band . It was founded in Los Angeles in 1981 and has been based in San Francisco since 1982 . They are one of the most successful metal bands in the world and have sold over 110 million albums to date. In the USA alone, the band sold over 62 million albums, making them the seventh most successful artist group in the country. Metallica has received a Grammy Award nine times .

In addition to Slayer , Megadeth and Anthrax , Metallica was one of the "big four" of Thrash Metal in the 1980s and is considered the most influential metal band of this decade. During the 1990s, Metallica opened up to new musical influences such as blues rock and other rock styles , appealing to a wider audience and at the same time irritating their previous fans, before the band returned to their musical roots in 2002.

Band history

Beginnings (1981–1983)

In April 1981, the Danish- born drummer Lars Ulrich placed an advertisement in the local newspaper “The Recycler” in southern California, looking for musicians for a band:

“Drummer is looking for other metal musicians to jam . Tygers of Pan Tang , Diamond Head , Iron Maiden "

- Display in the "Recycler"

The rhythm guitarist and singer James Hetfield and the bassist Ron McGovney then invited Ulrich to their rehearsal room and played some cover versions of Judas Priest songs. Since Hetfield and McGovney thought Ulrich was a bad drummer, the musicians parted ways for the time being. Ulrich became friends with Brian Slagel , who published the metal fanzine "Heavy Metal Revue" and who founded his own music label with Metal Blade Records . Its first release should be the sampler Metal Massacre with local bands. Although Ulrich didn't have a band himself, he asked Slagel for a place on the sampler. After receiving the acceptance, he got back in touch with Hetfield and formed the band.

Ulrich and Hetfield then decided to use their first own composition Hit the Lights for the sampler. With another ad, the band was looking for a lead guitarist , and they struck gold with Jamaican Lloyd Grant. After completing the recordings, guitarist Dave Mustaine reported , who was eventually accepted into the band in place of Grant. Due to time constraints, however, the version with Grant's solo found its way onto the first edition of the sampler. A band name was needed for the sampler at short notice; the suggestions Thunderfuck , Helldriver , Grinder , Blitzer , Red Vette , Deathchamber and Flying Tigers were rejected.

The band logo designed by Hetfield and used for a long time

The band got their name from Ulrich's friend Ron Quintana. He was looking for a name for his fanzine and presented Ulrich with a list of possible names. Ulrich liked the name Metallica on it so much that he persuaded Quintana to name his fanzine "Metal Mania" and to be able to use Metallica as a suggestion for his own band. Ulrich's band colleagues reacted enthusiastically and Hetfield designed the corresponding band logo . On March 14, 1982 Metallica played their first concert at Radio City Hall in Anaheim . A month later the band recorded their first demo Power Metal , the name of which was derived from the enclosed business card . The Metal Massacre sampler was released on June 14, 1982. Due to a typographical error, the band was announced as Mettallica. In July 1982 the band recorded their second demo No Life 'Til Leather , which was received euphorically in the underground scene in the San Francisco Bay Area .

In the fall of 1982 McGovney left the band. He was succeeded by Cliff Burton , who left his former band Trauma in favor of Metallica. However, Burton made the condition that the remaining Metallica members had to move to him in San Francisco . At the same time, the No Life 'Til Leather demo fell into the hands of former punter Jon Zazula. He contacted the band and gave them the opportunity to perform on the east coast. Since the disputes with Dave Mustaine got out of hand, Ulrich, Hetfield and Burton decided to throw Mustaine out of the band on the trip to New York .

Dave Mustaine had to leave the band in 1983 after a dispute

The new lead guitarist was Kirk Hammett , who had previously played with Exodus . On April 16, 1983, the first Metallica concert with Hammett took place in Dover . At the time, the band lived in an old New York factory where Anthrax had their rehearsal room.

“Sometimes we girls would tear up and go home with them so we could at least take a shower. We were really struggling to survive, but in retrospect it was a good time. "

- James Hetfield

Zazula tried to get a record deal for Metallica. Since he only received rejections from all labels, he founded his own label, which he called Megaforce Records at Burton's suggestion .

Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning (1983-1984)

Zazula borrowed $ 12,000 and funded the band's studio time at Music America Studios in Rochester . Since Hetfield had doubts about his vocal talents, the band considered hiring a permanent vocalist. Tygers of Pan Tang's Jess Cox was too old in the band's opinion, while Armored Saint singer John Bush turned down the offer. Therefore the band started the recordings with four people and finished them after 17 days. The album includes four songs co-composed by Dave Mustaine, who was no longer a member of the band at the time. Originally the album was supposed to be called Metal Up Your Ass and the cover should show a dagger emerging from a toilet . Zazula's sales partner Relativity refused both.

In response to Burton's defiant exclamation: “ Well, let's kill 'em all! “Followed Metallica's suggestion to choose Kill 'Em All as the album title. This title was accepted by Relativity without any problems. The album was released on July 25, 1983 and initially sold sluggishly in the United States. Metallica, on the other hand, was celebrated as the band of the hour in England . On a five-week tour through the USA, the band Raven was supported by Metallica as the opening act. By the end of 1983, Kill 'Em All had sold around 17,000 copies in the United States. During the concert tours, the band wrote new songs that were more progressive and slower than those of the debut album. Metallica's first concerts in Europe took place in the opening act for Venom .

Due to the favorable exchange rate between the US dollar and the Danish krone , the recordings for the second studio album Ride the Lightning took place in the Sweet Silence studios in the Danish capital, Copenhagen . For reasons of cost, the recordings took place at night. Lyrically, the band moved away from the usual metal clichés . So acts z. B. the song Creeping Death about the exodus of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery . Ride the Lightning was awarded a Silver Record in the UK . Metallica's first headlining tour through Europe followed in late 1984.

Master of Puppets and Cliff Burton's Death (1985-1986)

Metallica was signed by the major label Elektra Records and received professional management with Q Prime. Ride the Lightning was re-released in the USA and reached number 100 on the US album charts without radio airplay . In early 1985 Metallica played more US tours with WASP and Armored Saint before working on new songs. In August 1985 the band played for the first time at the Monsters of Rock in Donington Park .

In September 1985, the band returned to Sweet Silence Studios to begin recording their third album, Master of Puppets . They received a large advance payment from their record company, which is why Metallica briefly considered engaging Martin Birch , who is known for his work with Iron Maiden, as a producer . However, it was decided to work again with Flemming Rasmussen . The recordings lasted a total of three months and were only interrupted by a performance at the Loreley Festival in Germany.

Master of Puppets was released in March 1986 and reached number 29 on the US album charts. Just a month later, the album received a gold record . Metallica toured North America as the opening act for Ozzy Osbourne . Before the concert in Evansville to Hetfield broke the Skateboarding the wrist . Hetfield limited himself to singing at some concerts, while guitar technician John Marshall (later Metal Church ) played the rhythm guitar.

In the autumn of 1986 Metallica went on a European tour with Anthrax . On September 27, 1986, the tour group was on the way from Stockholm to Copenhagen. Metallica's bus skidded on the icy road near Ljungby and overturned. Burton was thrown out of his bunk before the bus fell on him.

Memorial stone for Cliff Burton

“I ripped open the emergency exit and climbed outside into the freezing cold in my underwear. [...] A few of our crew members were already walking around the bus to check what exactly had happened. I hear Kirk [Hammett] inside, 'What's going on?' and then I turned to see Cliff's [Burton's] legs sticking out from under the vehicle. "

- James Hetfield

An autopsy revealed that Burton's chest had been crushed and his lungs crushed. The other bus occupants got away with minor injuries. Kirk Hammett, who had always slept in Burton's bunk before, had luck in misfortune. Before the trip to Copenhagen, the band had decided to redistribute the bunks with the help of playing cards . Burton pulled the spades -Ass and chose Hammett's bunk at the window. Burton was buried in Castro Valley on October 7, 1986 .

Two weeks later the band began looking for a successor. Metallica received a rejection from the preferred candidate Joey Vera (Armored Saint). About 40 bassists, including Les Claypool ( Primus ) and Greg Christian ( Testament ) played. The contract was awarded Jason Newsted , who, with his old band Flotsam and Jetsam regarded as an excellent songwriter had developed.

... And Justice for All (1987–1990)

On November 8, 1986 Metallica played its first concert in Reseda with Newsted on bass. After a short tour through Japan and Canada , the band made up for the concerts in Europe that were canceled due to Burton's accidental death in January 1987, which also included two concerts in Poland , which was then still under communist rule . In March 1987, Hetfield broke his wrist again while skateboarding, which is why the band had to cancel their appearance on the television show Saturday Night Live . After Hetfield's recovery was in Ulrich's garage EP Garage Days Re-Revisited added, the cover versions of Diamond Head, Holocaust , Killing Joke , Budgie and the Misfits contains.

In October 1987 the band began preparing for their fourth studio album … And Justice for All . Since Flemming Rasmussen was busy elsewhere, the band was looking for a new producer. The collaboration with Mike Clink, who shortly before produced the Guns n 'Roses debut Appetite for Destruction , turned out to be a mistake, so Ulrich Rasmussen urged him to go through with his productions as soon as possible. ... And Justice for All was released in August 1988 and reached number 6 on the US charts. The album went platinum on Halloween . But … And Justice for All was viewed critically because of the clinically cool sound and because of Jason Newsted's almost completely faded out bass playing.

After the band had been reluctant to make a music video for years , this time a video was created for the song " One " which contains excerpts from Dalton Trump's film Johnny Goes to War . MTV put the video in daily rotation and the single hit the top 40 on the US charts. Metallica's nomination for a Grammy in the category “Best Hard Rock / Metal Performance” was unsuccessful, the award went to Jethro Tull . The band reacted with humor and provided part of the ... And Justice for All edition with a sticker that read "Grammy Award Losers". The tour for the … And Justice for All album comprised a total of 230 concerts and lasted until October 1989. Metallica then took a break and only played a few concerts.

Metallica - "The Black Album" (1990-1993)

In February 1990 the band received their first Grammy in the category " Best Metal Performance " for the song "One", before the recordings for the fifth studio album began in October 1990. From a riff written by Kirk Hammett, the song " Enter Sandman " develops , which should become the guide for the entire album. The band aimed for simpler songs that should get to the point faster. To this end, Metallica asked the Canadian Bob Rock , who had previously worked with Aerosmith , Bon Jovi and Mötley Crüe , if he would like to mix the new album . In the end, Rock produced the entire album. The band spent a total of one year in the studio. The entire recording cost $ 1 million and resulted in divorce for three band members .

“It was the hardest album we've ever made. At some point it was clear that it was going to be damn good, but I still hated Bob [Rock] and didn't talk to him for a year afterwards. [...] When we finally recovered from the exertion, we became good friends. "

- Lars Ulrich

"Enter Sandman" was released as the first single and reached number 9 in the German single charts. The self-titled album was released on August 12, 1991 and entered the US album charts at number one. In the first week alone, over 650,000 albums were sold in the United States alone. Through Metallica , the band was able to tap into new fan groups outside of the metal scene. To date, the album has sold over 15 million times in the United States. It was also received positively overall by the critics, and the balladNothing Else Matters ” with its orchestral arrangement composed by Michael Kamen became the favorite song of many wedding couples and received massive airplay in the mainstream media . From the point of view of many metal fans, however, the album marks a step in the wrong direction for precisely these reasons and is therefore quite controversial today.

In the late summer of 1991 the "Wherever We May Roam" tour began. Metallica first played as a co-headliner in front of AC / DC at the “Monsters of Rock” festival before the band performed together with AC / DC and Pantera in front of an estimated 500,000 people at the Tuschino airfield near Moscow . This was followed by an indoor tour through North America, during which the band had their stage set up in the middle of the hall. In the middle of the stage known as the "Snake Pit" was ( Engl. "Snake pit") was established, were able to follow the concerts in which about 200 fans. The band interrupted the tour and opened the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert on April 20, 1992 at London's Wembley Stadium .

James Hetfield

Metallica played a stadium tour of North America with Guns N 'Roses in the summer of 1992. Both bands played two and a half hour concerts, with Guns N 'Roses insisting on going on stage after Metallica. On August 8, 1992, both bands were playing in the Olympic Stadium of Montreal . During the song " Fade to Black ", Hetfield was caught in a six-meter-high column of flame and suffered second-degree burns . Axl Rose canceled the Guns N 'Roses concert because of an alleged sore throat, causing riots among the angry spectators. At the following Metallica concerts, John Marshall took over the rhythm guitar again because of Hetfield's burns. The tour cycle dragged on until July 1993, which left the four musicians mentally and physically drained. At the end of 1993, Metallica released Live Shit: Binge & Purge, its first box set . a. Contained three live CDs and two live videos.

Load and ReLoad (1994–1997)

Aside from a three-month tour of North America, including a headline appearance at the Woodstock II festival, the Metallica band members withdrew from the public eye during 1994 and looked after their families. In October the band started writing new songs. The recordings began in May 1995. Due to the bad experience during the recording of the black album, the band didn't want to stress this time and took regular breaks. A performance as the headliner of the Monsters of Rock Festival was followed by a Metallica concert on September 3, 1995 in Tuktoyaktuk , the northernmost community on mainland Canada. Numerous oil heaters were necessary for the instruments to work at all. On the occasion of the 50th birthday of Motörhead singer Lemmy Kilmister , Metallica played a concert in Los Angeles under the code name "The Lemmys", at which only Motörhead songs were covered.

A total of 27 songs were recorded and the band planned to release a double album. Instead, the songs were split into two albums that were released within a year and a half. It all started in June 1996 with Load . The album cover , designed by the provocation artist Andres Serrano , shows a mixture of Serrano's semen and bovine blood, which he pressed between two panes of Plexiglas . The new musical direction of the band, which showed influences from country and blues , was discussed as controversially by many fans as the short haircuts of the band members.

“For me, Metal in its well-known form is in a coma . The bands repeat themselves and have dug their own grave. Let's be honest: who needs the tenth version of the same album that Running Wild , for example, rerun year after year? [...] Heavy Metal in its original form as a rebellious, fresh underground movement is meaningless. "

- Lars Ulrich

Metallica headlined the Lollapalooza tour. During this tour, Jason Newsted traveled in his own bus, which had a mobile recording studio installed. Together with the Exodus drummer Tom Hunting and Devin Townsend he founded the project “IR8” ( synonym for the English adjective irate = angry, angry) and recorded a demo. James Hetfield, in particular, resented this approach to sideline activity, while Newsted cited the fact that Metallica did not want to be a songwriter and was therefore underutilized. At the MTV Europe Video Music Awards 1996, the band played a medley of the songs “So What” and “Last Caress” instead of “King Nothing ”. Because of the obscene lyrics of "So What", MTV cut Metallica's appearance on all reruns of the show.

ReLoad appeared in November 1997 . The album cover, also designed by Andres Serrano, this time contained a mixture of blood and urine . Like Load , ReLoad entered the US charts at number 1. The first single " The Memory Remains ", as well as the accompanying video clip, included a guest appearance by British singer and actress Marianne Faithfull . The tour for the album was relatively short.

Garage Inc. and S&M (1997–1999)

Without any major preparations, the band took eleven cover versions of bands and artists such as B. Black Sabbath , Thin Lizzy , Mercyful Fate , Bob Seger and Discharge . Along with all previously released covers album came under the name Garage Inc. to market. Metallica was inducted into the Walk of Fame in Los Angeles in March 1999 . The then Mayor Willie Brown proclaimed March 7, 1999 "Official Metallica Day".

On April 21 and 22, 1999, the band took on two appearances with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Michael Kamen . Kamen, who, in addition to his classical training and success as a film composer, had great experience in the implementation of such projects, had arranged the string instruments for the song Nothing Else Matters from the black album. Even then, Kamen tried to convince the band to perform their music once accompanied by a symphony orchestra . For the performance, the band composed two new songs with "No Leaf Clover" and "-Human". The recording of the performance was released in November 1999 under the name S&M . "Nothing Else Matters" was released as a single and reached number 2 in the German single charts. Further appearances with symphony orchestras took place in November of that year in Berlin and New York City .

The Napster controversy and Newsted's exit (2000–2001)

Metallica recorded the song " I Disappear " exclusively for the film Mission: Impossible II . After the band found out that a demo version was played by different radio stations, it was found that all the tracks of the band in the previously published peer-to-peer - Exchange Napster for free download became available. Metallica then sued Napster and the universities of Southern California , Yale and Indiana for copyright infringement and violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). In response, Yale and Indiana blocked Napster on all computers, whereupon Metallica withdrew lawsuits against both universities.

With the help of the online service provider "NetPD", Napster was presented with a 60,000 page list with 335,435 users, with the request to ban these users. The rapper Dr. Dre joined Metallica's lawsuit, banning an additional 230,142 users from Napster.

Lars Ulrich behind his drums in 2004

“It hurts us to know that our property is treated more like a commodity and less than the art it actually is. From a business point of view, taking something that doesn't belong to you is pure piracy. The exchange of such information, whether it is music, videos or photos, is nothing other than trading in stolen goods. "

- Lars Ulrich

Napster then began in March 2001 to block users and Metallica songs by activating filters based on lists of IP addresses ; in July the band withdrew their copyright lawsuit. In a Yahoo chat in 2000, Ulrich stated that the band had sued “Napster” solely for distributing their studio albums. But you still want to allow the exchange of self-made live recordings, so-called bootlegs .

In the summer of 2000 the band went on the “Summer Sanitarium” tour through North America with Korn , Kid Rock and System of a Down . On July 4, 2000, during the concert in Baltimore , a fan fell from the upper tier of PSINet Stadium and died. Two weeks later, another fan died during a secret concert in Hollywood .

During the "Summer Sanitarium" tour, Newsted isolated himself more and more from the band. Tensions also grew between Hetfield and Ulrich. On the advice of their manager, the band decided to hire psychologist Phil Towle. Even before the first meeting, Newsted had decided to leave the band. The official reason for the exit was that Newsted had ruined his cervical spine with excessive headbanging . The real motivations for Newsted's exit, however, lay elsewhere.

Newsted has been working with the band Echobrain since 1996 . Since Metallica wanted to take a longer break, Echobrain planned to record an album. Hetfield was against it and questioned Newsted's loyalty to the band.

“The band died for me on September 27th, 2000. That day James [Hetfield] stomped me into the ground. He was having a bunch of personal problems at the time and I had to pay for it. […] My last meeting with the band took place on January 8, 2001. After I announced my exit, I collapsed in front of the others. Everyone in the room was crying, the tension was unbearable. At the end I said: 'I don't want to do that, but I have to, because I want to be able to look myself in the eye.' "

- Jason Newsted

Without a bass player, the band began preparing for a new studio album in April 2001 on the grounds of the former Presidio military barracks . Metallica was accompanied by filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, who recorded over 1,000 hours of footage over the course of two years . Due to constant quarrels between Hetfield and Ulrich, the band made slow progress. In July, Hetfield dropped out and underwent rehabilitation to treat his alcohol addiction . The withdrawal lasted until December. At about the same time, the band moved into their “headquarters” in San Rafael , a building complex that housed rehearsal and recording rooms as well as offices.

St. Anger (2002-2005)

Robert Trujillo

Metallica began the recordings for the eighth studio album St. Anger with Bob Rock as bassist . The anger built up in the band members was channeled into eleven raw, hardcore- heavy songs. Guitar solos were completely dispensed with, while Ulrich's snare sounds like a timbale . After completing the recordings, the search for a new bass player began. Pepper Keenan ( Corrosion of Conformity ), Scott Reeder ( Kyuss ) and Jeordie White ( Marilyn Manson ) played among others , but the choice fell on the former Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne bassist Robert Trujillo . Jason Newsted joined the Canadian band Voivod and played in Ozzy Osbourne's band during the Ozzfest tour in 2003 .

On the occasion of the 20th stage anniversary, the band was honored with the "mtvIcon" award. During the one-hour broadcast, bands influenced by Metallica such as Korn, Staind , Limp Bizkit and Sum 41 as well as Snoop Dogg and Avril Lavigne interpreted Metallica songs from various albums. At the end of the show, Metallica appeared for the first time with Robert Trujillo and played a medley of "Hit the Lights", "Enter Sandman", "Blackened", "Creeping Death" and "Battery". In May 2003, the music video for the song " St. Anger " was shot in San Quentin State Prison .

St. Anger , released on June 5, 2003, became the most controversial album in the band's history. While some appreciated the raw sound of the album, St. Anger met with rejection from many old fans. Nevertheless, the album reached number one on the album charts in over 30 countries. On the following "Madly in Anger" world tour, however, with " Frantic " and the title song, usually only two songs from the album were played. Shortly before appearing at the Download Festival , Lars Ulrich had to be admitted to a Zurich hospital because of severe stomach ache, which turned out to be harmless . Metallica played a shortened concert with Dave Lombardo ( Slayer ), Joey Jordison ( Slipknot ) and Ulrich's drum technician Flemming Larsen helping out.

In the summer of 2004 ten Metallica albums were simultaneously in the Swedish album charts. In total, the band grossed $ 43 million in 2004, making it the third most successful act in the United States after Prince and Madonna . Also in 2004 was the documentary Some Kind of Monster released, which was made during the recording of the St. Anger album. In 2005 Metallica only played two concerts as the opening act for the Rolling Stones in San Francisco. A year later the band played their first concerts in South Africa .

Death Magnetic (2006-2010)

Kirk Hammett

After Bob Rock produced the band's last six albums, the band announced in February 2006 that the next studio album would be produced by Rick Rubin . Rubin had made a name for himself as a producer of artists such as AC / DC , Slayer , System of a Down , the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Johnny Cash . As part of their “Escape from the Studio '06” tour, the band performed for the third time in June 2006 at the Rock am Ring / Rock im Park festivals and on the Berlin Waldbühne . For the twentieth anniversary of the release of the album Master of Puppets, all of the songs on it were performed. Metallica also played an untitled new song in Berlin. A compilation of all music videos was released on DVD in December 2006 under the title The Videos: 1989-2004 .

Metallica recorded a cover version of the song The Ecstasy of Gold , which was released on a tribute album for composer Ennio Morricone . The Ecstasy of Gold comes from the Italo- Western Two Glorious Scoundrels and has been used as the intro for every concert since 1983. The recordings for the ninth studio album Death Magnetic began in March 2007. In the summer of the same year Metallica played a short stadium tour through Europe. The announcement of the concert in the Finnish capital Helsinki led to ten Metallica albums being placed in the Finnish album charts at the end of May 2007. Metallica recorded the song Remember Tomorrow for the Iron Maiden tribute sampler Maiden Heaven , which was a blueprint for the band for songs like Fade to Black or Welcome Home (Sanitarium) .

On September 2nd, 2008, ten days before the planned release, the first copies of the new album were mistakenly sold in France . Immediately the album appeared on the Internet exchange sites. Lars Ulrich remained calm about this premature leak and described it as a success that the album only appeared on the Internet ten days before it was released. Death Magnetic entered the album charts in 32 countries around the world. In the USA, Death Magnetic made the direct jump to number one as the fifth Metallica album. Metallica previously shared the record with the Beatles , U2 and the Dave Matthews Band with four albums.

On the day of publication, Death Magnetic was presented in a concert in the Berlin multifunctional hall O 2 World . In October 2008 the “World Magnetic” tour began.

On April 4, 2009, Metallica was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . For the first time since separating in 2001, Metallica played both Master of Puppets and Enter Sandman with former bassist Jason Newsted. In April 2010 Metallica won the Revolver Golden God Award in the “Best Live Band” category. In June 2010 Metallica went on the Big Four tour with Slayer , Megadeth and Anthrax . On October 29, 2010 the DVD / Blu-ray The Big Four Live from Sofia, Bulgaria , which was produced on this tour, was released .

Lulu and Hardwired ... to Self-Destruct (since 2011)

On the occasion of Metallica's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , Metallica performed with Lou Reed, among others . After this gig the idea arose to publish a joint album. On October 31, 2011, the album Lulu was released worldwide, but received mostly poor reviews. Due to the euro crisis , the band announced at the end of 2011 that they would change their tour plans and bring forward various performances. Band manager Cliff Burnstein said that the euro was expected to weaken in the coming years and that they wanted to give concerts while they were still as profitable as possible. Therefore, Metallica would play its black album at various festivals in Europe in 2012 and not as planned in 2013 .

On December 14, 2011 Metallica released the EP Beyond Magnetic digitally , on which four previously unreleased songs from the Death Magnetic recordings can be heard. The songs had previously been played live for the first time at the four concerts for the band's thirtieth anniversary in December 2011 in San Francisco. The band worked with Nimród Antal on the 3-D film Metallica Through the Never , which was released on September 27, 2013. For the film, the band's concerts in Mexico and Canada in summer 2012 were filmed. However, the film turned out to be a flop due to low revenue . Metallica headed for the Deep Purple -Tribute sampler Re-Machined: A Tribute to Deep Purple's Machine Head song When a Blind Man Cries at.

On December 8, 2013 Metallica played as the first band in Antarctica . This makes them the only band in the world that performed on all continents within a year.

On January 26, 2014 Metallica performed together with the Chinese pianist Lang Lang at the Grammy Awards 2014 , where they played the song One together. A short time later it became known that Metallica had made a medley of some of his well-known Rainbow hits for a Ronnie James Dio Tribute sampler . It should take about 9 minutes and contain parts of the songs A Light in the Black , Tarot Woman , Stargazer and Kill the King . The album will be called This Is Your Life . On March 16, 2014 Metallica performed in Bogotá and introduced their new song Lords of Summer . It was also confirmed that a new studio album will probably be released in 2016. Metallica's long-time project manager in France, Thomas Ayad from Universal Music France, died in the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015, in the massacre and hostage-taking in Bataclan .

The performance fees for Metallica are in the single-digit million range. As the driving force behind the twin festivals Rock im Revier and Rockavaria organized by DEAG , Metallica received 7.3 million US dollars (approx. 6.6 million €).

Metallica at the O2 Arena in London (2017)

For November 18, 2016 - eight years after Death Magnetic  - the release of the tenth studio album with the title Hardwired ... to Self-Destruct was announced on the band's homepage : It is a double album with twelve new songs. August 2016 the song Hardwired including the music video was released as a single in advance. At the same time the tracklist and the album cover were announced. On February 12, 2017, Metallica performed with Lady Gaga at the 2017 Grammy Awards . Hetfield sang the song Moth into Flame from the 2016 album Hardwired… to Self-Destruct in a duet .

reception

Metallica is one of the most influential and successful metal bands worldwide. Korn singer Jonathan Davis calls Metallica his favorite band because they "always went their own way and are still relevant today". According to Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin, Metallica is the biggest influence on his band. Larkin explained that Metallica changed his life when he was 16 because he had never heard anything so hard before. The Trivium guitar-player Matt Heafy and Corey Beaulieu learned their instrument after they came for the first time with the music of Metallica in contact. Joey Z., the guitarist of Life of Agony , describes Kirk Hammett as his role model and claims that he came to play the guitar through him. For Avenged Sevenfold singer M. Shadows, the joint concerts were the climax of the musician's career. Armored Saint singer John Bush praised Metallica for the fact that the band "followed an exemplary career path and never allowed themselves to be talked into". For Kim Thayil from the band Soundgarden , Metallica is an “example of honest success without TV and radio hype ”.

The British rock magazine Kerrang published a tribute album in April 2006 entitled Master of Puppets: Remastered on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the album Master of Puppets . The album includes cover versions of the eight songs by bands such as Machine Head , Bullet for My Valentine , Chimaira , Mastodon , Mendeed and Trivium. In 1996 the Finnish band Apocalyptica released their debut album Plays Metallica By Four Cellos , on which eight metallic songs are played with cellos . The parody band Beatallica combines the music of Metallica with that of the Beatles . The owners of the musical rights of the Beatles, Sony , sued Beatallica, because the band had caused "substantial and irreparable damage" according to Sony. Lars Ulrich asked Metallica's attorney, Peter Paterno, to provide Beatallica with legal support.

MTV placed Metallica in its list of "Greatest Metal Bands of All Time" in third place. The TV broadcaster VH1 put the band at number five on their list of the 100 greatest hard rock bands. The album Master of Puppets took first place in the list of the "100 best metal albums" by the online magazine Metal Rules. Metallica is represented with five albums in the book Best of Rock & Metal by the German magazine Rock Hard , which lists the 500 strongest metal and hard rock albums of all time, according to the Rock-Hard editorial team. Master of Puppets came in second, followed by Ride the Lightning . The debut album Kill 'Em All is at number 12, the self-titled fifth album at number 79 and Garage Inc. at number 500.

The game manufacturer Activision worked with Neversoft to produce a Metallica offshoot of their popular Guitar Hero series of music games . In Guitar Hero: Metallica are ( Downloadable Content not included) included 31 Metallica songs and 21 self-determined by the band guest songs. Both the band itself (who themselves brought all the animations with characteristic poses and movements into play via motion capture ) and the two guest stars, King Diamond from Mercyful Fate and Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead , are playable characters. The game was released in Europe on May 22, 2009 for PlayStation 2 , PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and Wii . Additional songs and the complete album Death Magnetic for this game can also be downloaded from the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live .

The Internet project A German Tribute to Metallica has existed since 2008 , in which German bands provide cover versions of Metallica songs. Participants included In Extremo , Madsen and the Donots .

In 2011, Rolling Stone listed Metallica as 61st of the 100 greatest musicians of all time .
