The Unnamed Feeling (English for: "the unnamed feeling" ) is a song by the US metal band Metallica . The song is the third single from their ninth studio album St. Anger and was released on January 12, 2004.

The "unnamed feeling" sung about in the song is an anxiety disorder that occurs in various situations and can lead to panic attacks in those affected . The lyrical self describes how it feels that fear is rising in it and it cannot do anything about it. They want to get rid of the uncomfortable feeling at all costs and even consider suicide .

The lyrics of the song were written by James Hetfield , Lars Ulrich , Kirk Hammett and Bob Rock . Metallica also worked with Bob Rock on production.

Music video

The Malloys directed the music video for The Unnamed Feeling in October 2003 . It shows different people who experience "the unnamed feeling" in different situations. A man suffering from claustrophobia gets stuck in the elevator while another man enters a bar and feels watched by everyone. The band plays in a small room with walls slowly moving inward. In between, words are repeatedly faded in that are associated with the feeling, such as “Anxiety”, “Stress”, “Disturbed” (“disturbed”), “Afraid” (“anxious”), “Panic” "Or" Psycho ".

The Unnamed Feeling entered the German single charts at number 31 on January 26, 2004, reached the highest position in the following week at number 24 and stayed in the top 100 for seven weeks.
