Music genre

Like Metallica's previous ballads and slow songs, this is the fourth track on the album. The intro starts with clean guitars in the verses, while the chorus is accompanied by distorted guitars. The tempo accelerates and the song gradually shifts to fast guitar playing and a long solo by Kirk Hammett; a structure that is comparable to that of One and Fade to Black . Like the aforementioned ballads, the end of the song is purely instrumental with numerous melodies, a solo and chord progressions.

Music video

A music video for the song was filmed in the desert outside of Los Angeles, California on July 31, 2008 under the direction of Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg . The premiere was on the official website of the band on September 1st, 2008 at midnight.

The video shows two experiences of a United States Marine Corps soldier on an overseas mission. First, the moving Humvee of the Marine is stopped by an explosion. After the crew took cover and looked for attackers, one of them realized he was injured. The protagonist provides first aid and calls for reinforcements. While the injured man is finally brought to safety by helicopter, it is implied that it may be his last flight.

In the following, the video leads to a similar situation in which the soldier and other comrades are on the road again in a vehicle and are stopped by a civilian. He twirls a jumper cable in the air to indicate that his Yugo will not start unaided. The soldiers suspect an ambush , surround the car of the person seeking help and secure the situation. The uncertainty of the main actor, who has already experienced the first situation, is particularly emphasized. The marines discover a woman in the car and tell her to get out. The woman wearing a burqa gets out and approaches the soldier, who now has to make a quick assessment of the danger. He decides to lower his rifle and orders his comrades to do the same. The Americans eventually help the man start the car and the main character stares at the sky.
