Master of Puppets (. English for " Master of Puppets ") is a song by American Metal - band Metallica . It is the second track on the album of the same name, Master of Puppets, and at the same time its first single. It is one of the most famous songs by the band.

The text for Master of Puppets is, as James Hetfield confirmed, about drugs and how life changes as a result: like a puppeteer, drugs take control of the addict's previously self-determined behavior. The line “chop your breakfast on a mirror” , for example, “chop up your breakfast on a mirror” , represents the preparation of powdered cocaine .

background

The song was recorded like the rest of the album Master of Puppets between September and December 1985 in the Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen , Denmark and released on March 3, 1986 with the help of the Elektra Records label. The producers are Flemming Rasmussen and Metallica themselves. With a total length of 8:38 minutes, it is the longest piece of music on the album and, along with Damage, Inc. , the only one in which all four members of the band have actively contributed to the music.

Awards

The song was voted the third best thrash metal song of all time by the TV channel VH1 . In March 2005, Q magazine placed it at number one in the list of 100 "best guitar pieces". It was also number 2 in the book The Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs of All Time by music journalist Martin Popoff . Popoff made this based on a survey of thousands of heavy metal fans who chose the piece for this position. It was also ranked number 1 of the 100 best guitar riffs by the English guitar magazine Total Guitar . It was also an extraordinary honor that the Master of Puppets solo was voted 61st of the 100 best guitar solos by the readers of Guitar World . Kirk Hammett's solos from Fade to Black and One were positioned even higher on the same list. In 2011 it took first place in the ranking of the “250 best rock and metal songs of all time” by the German music magazine Rock Hard .

Live performances

The song has been played at almost every concert since the album of the same name was released, over 1300 times in total. From 1991 to 1997 Metallica only played it up to the second chorus, but after the DVD concert Cunning Stunts , when the song was last played like this, they began playing Master of Puppets all over again - the first time since Damaged Justice Tour 1989. Complete live versions can also be found on the DVDs for Cliff 'em All and S&M as well as Live Shit: Binge & Purge , with the latter only showing the performance in Seattle 1989, the other two appearances again show the cut version .
