Broken, Beat & Scarred (English for: " Broken, beaten and scarred ") is a song by the US metal band Metallica . It is the band's 45th single and the sixth single from their ninth studio album, Death Magnetic . It was released on April 3, 2009. There are two versions of the single, a digi single and a maxi single. There is also a video by Wayne Isham .

background

The band initially disagreed about the song title. James Hetfield found it too long, but Lars Ulrich was "very persistent" with it.

On March 19, 2009 the band announced on their website that Broken, Beat & Scarred would be the next single. The new video was presented on March 26th. It shows the band live on the Death Magnetic tour. Director Wayne Isham had worked for the band several times, for example on the DVD Cunning Stunts .

In Southeast Asia , Australia and New Zealand the single was partially delivered with a faulty booklet. The band announced that no one from the band had checked the artwork there and called the version a "collector's item".

content

The text of the song, which was written by James Hetfield, is based on a well-known quote from Friedrich Nietzsche with the line “ What don't kill you make you more strong ” : “What doesn't kill me makes me stronger”. It comes from the work Götzen-Twilight or How to philosophize with the hammer from 1889.
