I Disappear ( English for "I disappear") is a song by the US metal band Metallica and an exclusive soundtrack contribution to the film Mission: Impossible II , with Tom Cruise in the lead role. It was the first time that the band recorded a song for a film and at the same time the last contribution with bassist Jason Newsted , who left the band shortly afterwards.

Music video

The video was shot in May 2000 under the direction of Wayne Isham . It shows the band together on a hill in Monument Valley . The opening scenes of the film also take place there. They show Cruise climbing the hill. In some cases, therefore, short excerpts from it can be seen. However, the individual band members experience a series of events in the video. For example, Kirk Hammett has to run away from an aircraft that is flying lower and lower in the desert. Jason Newsted has to jostle through an infinite number of people. James Hetfield is followed by a pressure wave in his car, which destroys everything in its way and Lars Ulrich is forced to jump out of the window of a skyscraper because a pressure wave penetrates the building. At the end you see the band being buried on the hill by a sandstorm. Shortly afterwards, Tom Cruise arrives at the summit.

Live performances

The song was first presented live at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards . On the subsequent Summer Sanitarium Tour 2000 , as well as the Madly in Anger with the World Tour , from 2003-2004, to the album St. Anger , the song was played regularly. Lately, however, the song has rarely been featured in the set lists.
