Helmut Hofbauer (* 1973 in Horn , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian philosopher .

Live and act

Helmut Hofbauer studied philosophy and Spanish at the University of Vienna, worked for ten years as a projectionist in the Viennese Votiv Kino and was lecturer for the Austrian cooperation at the German Institute of the University of Wrocław in Breslau / Poland for six years . Currently (2012) he works for the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Diagnosis and Regeneration of Cardiac and Thoracic Diseases of Assoc.-Prof. Dr. Hendrik Jan Leonard Ankersmit works at the Medical University of Vienna.

The focus of his philosophical research is the single person, the individual, and their ability to recognize, act and communicate with other people. Hofbauer considers this to be an outsider issue, since the academically organized philosophy at present theoretically prefers to deal with larger units (science, ethics, culture, the “we” of political action etc.) than the (individual) person. However, he thinks that the return to the individual can sometimes lead to important corrections in large-scale theoretical concepts and bring concrete ideas to abstract designs.

If the individual with his options for action were not the general theme of his works, these would be assigned to the disciplines of sociology, epistemology, intercultural communication, German studies and philosophy of science, and their unity would not be apparent. Hofbauer's understanding of philosophy is strongly influenced by the Spanish philosophers Fernando Savater and José Ortega y Gasset .
