Some Kind of Monster ( English for: "a kind of monster" ) is an EP and a song by the US metal band Metallica . The song was released in EP form as the fourth single from their ninth studio album St. Anger on July 13, 2004. The documentary of the same name Metallica: Some Kind of Monster was released at the same time .

The song is about "a kind of monster" like Frankenstein's monster that lives in every human being. It is paraphrased as “the burden of every man”, “the pain that never stops” or “the fist that knocks you down”, among other things.

Music video

The video was recorded while recording on St. Anger in San Rafael, California in 2002 and 2003 , directed by Bruce Sinofsky . It contains a 4:30 minute version of the song that is much shorter than the album version and shows the band at concerts and when the song is being played in their quarters. It also contains excerpts from the documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster , which deals with the creation process of the St. Anger album .

The EP was produced by Metallica in collaboration with Canadian music producer Bob Rock .

Cover design

The cover of the EP was designed by Matt Mahurin. It shows a monster-like being with wings that opens its mouth and sticks its head upwards. Above the picture is the word Metallica and below the title Some Kind of Monster in red letters on a black background.

Some Kind of Monster entered the German album charts at number 65 on September 13, 2004 and stayed in the top 100 for three weeks. The EP also hit the charts in Austria, Switzerland and the United States. She was particularly successful in Finland, where she finished 5th.

The Grammy Awards 2005 was Some Kind of Monster in the category Best Hard Rock Performance nominated, but lost the song Slither by Velvet Revolver .
