Jason Curtis Newsted (born March 4, 1963 in Battle Creek , Michigan ) is an American bassist . He from 1986 to 2001 member of the Metal - band Metallica and played from mid-2002 to 2009, the Canadian thrash metal band Voivod . He was also a founding member of Flotsam and Jetsam and was active with his solo projects Echobrain and Papa Wheelie, most recently with the Newsted project .

Career

Newsted was born the son of an export manager. His mother worked as a teacher in a center for the deaf. At the age of 14, Newsted received his first electric bass . After the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, Newsted and three friends formed a metal band that they called Dogz and later Flotsam and Jetsam. Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records had been so excited since the band was discovered that he helped them support numerous appearances in Arizona.

After Cliff Burton's accidental death in 1986 , Newsted joined Metallica as the new bass player . In the following years Newsted recorded five studio albums and one EP with Metallica and was responsible for the backing vocals in addition to the bass during the intensive tours. On the stage, he often took on the role of heating up and sought direct contact with the audience.

Newsted left Metallica in early 2001. At first he gave back and neck problems due to his years of excessive headbanging as a reason. In various interviews with Newsted and James Hetfield , Metallica's front man, other reasons later became clear. At Metallica, Newsted was denied almost any creative development for years. He was only listed as a co-composer on three titles - and one of them, My Friend of Misery ( Black Album ), was originally planned by him as an instrumental piece. He therefore looked for compensation in various side projects with musician friends he was friends with. When he finally wanted to professionalize his solo project “Echobrain”, Hetfield forbade him to do so. This led to great personal and artistic disappointment at Newsted, which eventually led him to leave Metallica in favor of his side projects.

Echobrain's first release was released in March 2002 on Newsted's own label, Chophouse Records. In 2003 he played bass with Ozzy Osbourne , where he replaced Robert Trujillo , who had recently taken Newsted's position at Metallica. On April 4, 2009, Newsted appeared for the first time since 2001 with his old band Metallica on the occasion of the group's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and played the two songs Master Of Puppets and Enter Sandman together with their current bassist Robert Trujillo .

After Newsted performed at all four concerts for Metallica's 30th anniversary in December 2011, he decided to start a band again. Under the provisional project name "Newsted Heavy Metal Music" an EP was produced on which Newsted both plays bass and sings. At the beginning of 2013 the simply Metal titled mini-album with four tracks was released as a download. The project name was shortened to Newsted . In 2013 the debut album Heavy Metal Music was released , which reached the top 20 of the album charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Supported by the concert agency Live Nation and industry expert Daniel Lieberberg as Management Jason Newsted member should a band project called Puritanzz and Pioneers are, composed of two members of the German rock band Böhse Onkelz , singer Kevin Russell and guitarist Matthias "Gonzo" tube , should be composed after the Böhsen Onkelz had provisionally dissolved in June 2005. However, Onkelz singer Kevin Russell jumped off in relation to his participation, which is why the band project did not materialize.
