Metal is the first EP by the US heavy metal band Newsted . It was released on January 8, 2013 via Chophouse Records.

Emergence

Originally, singer and bassist Jason Newsted wanted to record the song Cobalt for the wedding with his wife Nicole . A friend rented him the Studio Creation Lab in the Californian city ​​of Turlock for a week in October 2012. The band paid $ 2,000 for it . The song Cobalt was recorded within three days . During the remaining four days, the musicians recorded four more songs, which were eventually released on the EP. Jason Newsted wrote the songs King of the Underdogs and Skyscraper in 2006 for the Rock Star Supernova project , which Newsted ran with Tommy Lee and Gilby Clarke at the time. The song Soldierhead was written within 20 minutes, according to Newsted.

The EP was produced by Jason Newsted with the support of Frank Munoz. Recorded, mixed and mastered was Metal Anthony Focx. For the song Soldier Head one was music video rotated. Was released Metal own over Newsteds record label Chophouse Records and was initially only via iTunes available. A week later the EP was also released on CD .

The song Soldierhead was inspired by the résumé of Pat Tillman . Tillman was a professional American football player in the National Football League . After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , he retired from his career and joined the United States Army . In Afghanistan , Tillman died from being shot at by his own army . Godsnake refers to a story from the Bible in which God appears in the form of a serpent . With the song Jason Newsted wants to express that one should not judge other people by their appearance. Skyscraper is an anti-war song.

Allmusic's Gregory Heaney wrote that metal "is certainly a promising first shot from a heavy metal veteran " that will keep fans of Newsted's other projects "hungry for more." Reinhold Reither from the Austrian online magazine Stormbringer described Metal “not yet as the yellow of the egg”, but as “the first sign of life from a new band that is worth hearing” and awarded 3.5 out of five points. The EP was sold about 6,200 times in the US in the first week after its release and reached number 62 on the US album charts .
