Heavy Metal Music is the first studio album by the US heavy metal band Newsted . It was released on August 2, 2013 via Epic Records .

Emergence

All songs were written by singer and bass player Jason Newsted . However, he used a guitar to compose . He resorted to riffs that he had partly written in the 1990s, such as Nocturnus . Ampossible consists of a riff that Newsted originally wrote for the Load and ReLoad albums while at Metallica . King of the Underdogs wrote Newsted for the Rock Star Supernova project . The songs Soldierhead and King of the Underdogs appeared on the EP Metal , which was released in January 2013.

The album was recorded in April 2013 at Jason Newsted's Chophouse Studios in Walnut Creek . Jason Newsted took care of production, while Mike Fraser mixed the album and Brian Lucey did the mastering . Shortly before the recordings of closed Staind - guitarist Mike Mushok of the band. According to Mushok, he recorded his guitar parts in just three days. Jason Newsted actually wanted to release the material on three EPs with the titles Heavy , Metal and Music , but this failed due to the veto of his record label . For the song King of the Underdogs one was music video rotated.

The song Soldierhead was inspired by the résumé of Pat Tillman . Tillman was a professional American football poker players in the National Football League and had a contract worth 3.6 million dollars . After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , he retired from his career and joined the United States Army . During a mission in Afghanistan , Tillman died from fire by his own army . The text includes Newsted's thoughts on what a soldier would think during combat.

In King of the Underdogs , Jason Newsted reflects on personal experiences. He explained in an interview that he has the feeling that many fans are cheering him on precisely because they see an underdog in Newsted . Jason Newsted pays tribute to Canadian guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour with the songs Long Time Dead and Twisted Tail of the Comet . Both musicians played in the band Voivod between 2002 and 2005 , before D'Amour died of colon cancer on October 26, 2005 .

Matthias Mineur from the German magazine Metal Hammer praised the “remarkable songwriting” and the “fat, vigorous production” in his review. Heavy Metal Music would "kick the buttocks of Metallica, who was quite lame recently," for which Mineur awarded six out of seven points. Marcel Rapp from the online magazine Powermetal.de described the album as a "small but nasty punch in all directions". Although he wanted more songs “at a faster pace”, he gave eight out of ten points. Sarah O'Connor of online magazine Rocksound.tv however, called Heavy Metal Music "second-rate collection as hard rock - jam sessions ". Since the album is "neither good nor bad," she gave it five out of ten points.

Heavy metal music reached number 17 in the German and number 15 in the Swiss album charts. In Austria , the album was ranked 20 and in the United Kingdom place 71. In the US album charts occupied Heavy Metal Music Place 40. During the first week of about 8,000 copies of the album were sold in the United States.
