Denis D'Amour

Denis D'Amour , nickname Piggy (* 1959 , † August 26, 2005 in Montreal ) was a Canadian musician . He gained fame as the guitarist and main songwriter of the metal band Voivod . His trademark was the combination of progressive rock with complex jazz - chords . Guitar World magazine ranked D'Amour 93rd of the 100 best metal guitarists of all time in 2004 .

Denis D'Amour grew up in Jonquière, an industrial city around five hours' drive north of Québec . He founded his first band Death Dealer in 1980 with his high school friend Michel Langevin on drums . The two met Jean-Yves Theriault, a local DJ , in 1981 and D'Amour taught him to play bass . In November 1982 the trio founded the thrash metal band Voivod , whose main songwriter and musical head D'Amour was until his death. He got his nickname "Piggy" because of his corpulence. In the mid-1990s, he ran the Tarrat project together with Voivod drummer Michel Langevin and Metallica bassist Jason Newsted , but it did not get beyond the demo stage. In the spring of 2005, D'Amour was diagnosed with colon cancer and died on August 26, 2005 in a hospital in Montreal . He left the Voivod musicians around 20 demo songs on his laptop , which formed the basis for the studio album Katorz , released in 2006 . In addition to his activities for Voivod, he played the guitar parts on the 2001 comeback album by the Canadian rock band Aut'Chose .
