Creeping Death (English for: " Creeping Death ") is a song by the US metal band Metallica . It is the seventh song on their second studio album, Ride the Lightning, from 1984, and was released as a 12 "single thatsame year.

Emergence

The band got the inspiration for this song when the musicians watched the feature film The Ten Commandments from 1956 together. During one scene, bassist Cliff Burton said " Wow, it's like creeping death "! ("Wow, that's like creeping death!"). The musicians liked the words "Creeping Death" so they wrote a song with these words as the title.

Originally the middle part of the song ("Die, by my hand I creep across the land ...") was written by Kirk Hammett's former band Exodus and was entitled Die by His Hands . It was recorded on a demo but not used on an Exodus album. Metallica's version was recorded at Sweet Silence Studios in the Danish capital, Copenhagen .

content

The song is about the ten plagues , which according to the Second Book of Moses in the 13th century BC. BC visited the land of Egypt . The title of the song denotes the tenth plague, in which the death of every firstborn son is ordered. The first and ninth plagues are explicitly mentioned in the text of the song. The first plague turned the water of the Nile into blood ( 2 Mos 7:20  LUT ). The ninth plague brought three days of darkness ( 2 Mos 10,21  LUT ).

reception

Stefan Lang from the online magazine Powermetal.de described Creeping Death as one of the Metallica songs and praised the lyrics because there aren't many bands that make Bible stories sound so good. Guitar World magazine voted Creeping Death as Metallica's Best Song.

Music videos

There is an unofficial music video of the song on YouTube that shows scenes from the film The Ten Commandments by Cecil B. de Milles that match the passages of the song running in the background . It was uploaded by YouTuber “Savagemister” and is simply called “Creeping Death”.

There are also several other videos of it on YouTube, some of which are very violent.

Live performances

Creeping Death is one of seven songs that Metallica have proven to have played in more than 1,000 concerts. Only the song Master of Puppets was played more often than Creeping Death . At three concerts in July 2000, bassist Jason Newsted took over the vocals because of an injury to the singer James Hetfield . The rhythm guitar was taken over by Kenny Tudrick from the live band of the singer Kid Rock . On June 6, 2004, Joey Jordison from the band Slipknot stepped in for the sick drummer Lars Ulrich .
