Kid Rock (born  Robert James Ritchie in Romeo , Macomb County , Michigan , January 17, 1971 ) is an American musician who combines southern rock with elements of hip-hop .

biography

Robert James Ritchie grew up in his native Romeo in Macomb County near Detroit as the son of an automobile dealer. He dealt with the hip-hop culture, especially breakdance . The Beastie Boys , who were one of the most important white hip-hop groups at the time and at the same time experimented very early with the connection between rock and hip-hop, had a particular influence . In 1988 Ritchie recorded his first demos, which gave him the opportunity to open up for Boogie Down Productions . This gig convinced Jive Records to release his debut album Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast . After a tour with Too Short and Ice Cube , the label broke the contract. Ritchie moved to Brooklyn , New York and signed a contract with the small label Continuum Records . In 1993 the second album The Polyfuze Method was released , which was more influenced by rock. A year later, the EP Fire It Up was released on Kid Rock's own Continuum Records - Imprint Top Dog .

Kid Rock (2007)

In 1996, Kid Rock moved back to Detroit, where their third album, Early Mornin 'Stoned Pimp , was released. At that time, Twisted Brown Trucker formed a background band around rapper Joseph "Joe C." Calleja. Further members were the guitarists Kenny Olson and Jason Krause, the keyboardist Jimmy Bones, the drummer Stefanie Eulinberg, Uncle Kracker and the singers Misty Love and Shirley Hayden. The label Atlantic Records decided in view of the beginning Nu-Metal wave to offer Kid Rock a record deal. The album Devil Without a Cause was released in August 1998. Neither the album nor the first single Welcome 2 the Party attracted much attention, only the second single Bawitdaba , supported by an extensive advertising campaign of the label and the interest of the music channel MTV , became a bigger one Success. The album soon reached top 5 positions on the US charts and went platinum seven times. In 1999 he played on the Woodstock III . A year later, The History of Rock was an album with old pieces and a few new ones. Devil Without a Cause has sold more than 11 million copies in the United States alone. The follow-up albums The History of Rock (2000) and Cocky (2001) were each sold more than two million times in the USA. With the single "Picture", a duet with Sheryl Crow from the album "Cocky", Kid Rock also achieved success in the field of country music in 2002 (No. 4 in the Billboard Hot 100, No. 23 in the Billboard Country Songs ).

In Europe, he was best known for his relationship with Pamela Anderson . The marriage was concluded in July 2006; it only lasted until November of that year. He made guest appearances on the Simpsons as well as on CSI: NY , where he played himself. He also starred in the films Biker Boyz and Joe Dreck . On the anniversary album Vicious Cycle for the 30th anniversary of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd from 2003 he can be heard in the remake of Gimme Back My Bullets . In 2004 Kid Rock re-recorded the Elton John classic Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) together with the Canadian band Nickelback for the soundtrack of the film Charlie's Angels - Full Power . In 2006 he played the ZZ-Top piece Tush together with Nickelback and ZZ Top at the 2006 Billboard Music Awards .

Kid Rock had a very special success in 2008 in German-speaking countries. On the album Rock N Roll Jesus (2007) the title All Summer Long was included. This is a mixture of Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon and Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd , which are based on the same chord progression (V-IV-II), with new lyrics. Originally, the song was not intended for an independent publication; But it was played so often on the radio on Bayern 3 that the decision was made to release it as a single in June 2008. In the week before the single CD was released , the song was already being sold as a download so often that it entered 4th place in Germany, the highest ranking for a download-only title to date. In Austria, the song climbed to number 1 in the same week. There it was the first single that could only reach the top position through download sales. Shortly afterwards, it was also able to place itself in first place in Germany and Switzerland. As a result, the song became popular across Europe, reaching number 1 in Great Britain and entering the top 20 in the United States. The album Rock N Roll Jesus also benefited from the success .

His 2010 album Born Free shows a clear development of his musical style, more and more in the direction of country music .

Political commitment

Kid Rock is considered a supporter of the Republican Party . In the 2012 presidential election campaign, he advocated the Republican candidate Mitt Romney and appeared at the party's nomination convention. His song Born Free became the theme song for the Romney campaign. Kid Rock stated that he would have allowed any other applicant for the office to use it and that he wanted his music to be heard. Kid Rock also supported the Republican candidate Donald Trump in the following presidential election in 2016 . After his election, he sold Trump-printed t-shirts in his webshop.
