Nickelback is a rock band from Hanna , Alberta , Canada , that was formed there in 1995. It consists of half-brothers Chad and Mike Kroeger and Daniel Adair and Ryan Peake .

history

Beginning ( hesher and curb )

The band was founded in the early 1990s by Chad Kroeger and his half-brother Mike and his cousin Brandon under the name The Village Idiots . In 1995 they finally renamed themselves Nickelback . The band name originated when Mike Kroeger was still working at Starbucks and there returned change. Since there were five cents as good as ever because of the prices, he said, "Here's your nickel back" ( "Here you have your nickel (5 cents) back"). When his brother Chad heard this, he suggested Nickelback as the band name.

In 1996 the EP Hesher, limited to 5000 copies, was released in Canada . In the same year they released their first studio album, Curb . This album also only brought them regional success. A year later, Brandon Kroeger left the band. He was briefly replaced by Mitch Guindon before Ryan Vikedal was appointed drummer in 1998 .

National Success ( The State )

In 1998, the second studio album, The State , was released on an independent label . Thanks to the single Leader of Men , Roadrunner Records scouts became aware of the band. Roadrunner Records signed the four musicians a year later, which was very unusual as the record company is more known for metal bands. In an interview, Ryan Peake said they signed there because “people are passionate about what they do” and you are not immediately “made a product”. In 2000 the album was re-released, including in the USA . The record received numerous Canadian music awards and achieved gold status there. A few years later, the album finally went platinum. The singles Leader of Men and Breathe reached the Top 10 Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks .

International breakthrough ( Silver Side Up )

With the third album Silver Side Up (2001), Nickelback finally achieved their international breakthrough. The album was written before The State and recorded in the same studio. The level of awareness increased tremendously, so that the planned European tour had to be relocated to larger halls. The album reached number 1 in the charts in several countries, including Canada and Great Britain . With over 177,000 copies sold, the album reached number 2 on the US charts. The singles How You Remind Me , Too Bad and Never Again were released one after the other . How You Remind Me is the band's most successful single to date. It reached number 1 on the charts in the United States and Canada and was the most successful single of 2002 in the US. How You Remind Me was the most played single on American radio from 2001 to 2009. The single was nominated for Record of the Year - Grammy in 2003 . The singles Too Bad and Never Again also reached the charts in several countries, but could not build on How You Remind Me . Because of the great success her debut album Curb was re-released. Chad Kroeger achieved additional fame when he and Josey Scott contributed the theme song Hero to the movie Spider-Man in 2002 . Hero was awarded three Grammy nominations. In the same year the band released their first DVD, Live at Home .

Further career ( The Long Road )

After the band had established a permanent position, the album The Long Road was not a great success. Although had Someday a similar radio hit single as How You Remind Me , but the other two released singles, Feelin 'Way to Damn Good and Figured You Out , could not build on the success of previous titles. See You at the Show was just the ZDF title song at EM 2004 .

In 2003, the band did with Kid Rock together to the Elton John -Klassiker Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting for 3 Charlie's Angels - Full Throttle record. The song also appeared on the deluxe edition of The Long Road . A year later, the band received more Grammy nominations for best rock song ( Someday ), best hard rock performance ( Feelin 'Way Too Damn Good ) and best rock album. Because of the similarities between Someday and How You Remind Me , Nickelback has been dubbed "the worst band in the history of music" by Boston Phoenix magazine .

At the climax ( All the Right Reasons )

At the beginning of 2005, the collaboration between Ryan Vikedal and the rest of the band ended because he was "not the right type of drummer the band needs [...]". Frontman Chad Kroeger then sued him for his royalties. His successor was Daniel Adair , who was previously active at 3 Doors Down . The band's fifth album, titled All the Right Reasons , was released in October 2005. It became a mega hit in the United States, being in the top 30 for over 100 weeks in Canada, the United States and New Zealand the album up to number 1, in Australia and the world charts for several weeks at number 2. More than 11 million copies were sold by All the Right Reasons ; this made it the most successful album in the band's history. A total of seven singles were released: Photograph , Animals , Savin 'Me , Far Away , Rockstar , If Everyone Cared and Side of a Bullet . In the singles Rockstar and Follow You Home had Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top with backing vocals. The single Side of a Bullet is dedicated to Dimebag Darrell from Pantera , who was shot on stage during a concert. Side of a Bullet's guitar riff was previously unreleased and played by Darrell himself.

Photograph is structured autobiographically and tells the life story of front man Chad Kroeger. The music video for Rockstar is a rarity of this kind, as known and unknown people sing the song lyrics playback . The personalities included fellow musicians like Billy Gibbons , Gene Simmons , Jerry Cantrell , Kid Rock , Nelly Furtado and Ted Nugent , but also athletes like Wayne Gretzky and Dale Earnhardt junior . A cover version of the Queen classic We Will Rock You was also released on a special edition of the album . The title Savin 'Me is part of the soundtrack of The Death Row , for If Everyone Cared the band received their seventh Grammy nomination.

In 2005, Chad Kroeger founded his own record label called 604 Records . On December 9, 2006, Nickelback appeared at Thomas Gottschalk's TV show Wetten, dass ..? with her single If Everyone Cared on. Nickelback raised $ 74.1 million in 2006 and was the third most successful rock band of the year after the Rolling Stones and Bon Jovi . In 2007 the group received a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto . In 2007, Chad Kroeger recorded the song Into the Night with Carlos Santana .

Further top placements ( Dark Horse )

On September 4, 2008 Roadrunner Records announced a new single and album. The album Dark Horse was released on November 14, 2008 and was produced by Mutt Lange . For this purpose, the Dark Horse Special Edition appeared on August 27, 2010 , which is equipped with three additional videos. The singles Gotta Be Somebody , Something in Your Mouth , If Today Was Your Last Day , I'd Come for You , Burn it to the Ground , Never Gonna Be Alone , Shakin 'Hands and This Afternoon were released one after the other . Both the album and the singles reached top positions in the global charts again. Then held Darkhorse 125 weeks in the US charts, of which a total of 97 consecutive weeks in the top 100th

On October 10, 2009, Nickelback appeared in Stefan Raab's TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge in the Veltins-Arena and played Burn It to the Ground there . The song Burn It to the Ground has been the official theme song of the WWE wrestling rooster RAW since autumn 2009 . With Burn It to the Ground , the band received their eighth Grammy nomination, this time for best hard rock performance.

At the end of 2008 Nickelback began an extensive world tour, which was extended several times due to its great success and finally comprised a total of 147 concerts; nearly 1.6 million tickets were sold. Sometimes up to three supporting bands were there, including Hinder , Breaking Benjamin , Papa Roach , Sick Puppies and Shinedown . In Germany, Nickelback played a total of four times as part of their Dark Horse Tour , with Daughtry performing as the opening act. On February 28, 2010, Nickelback performed in front of 60,000 people at the final concert of the 2010 Winter Olympics .

Here and Now and No Fixed Address

The seventh studio album with the name Here and Now was released worldwide on November 21, 2011 and exclusively in Germany on November 18, 2011. For the first time, the album reached number 2. The two singles When We Stand Together and Bottoms Up were previously published simultaneously. In January 2012, Lullaby followed as a single. This Means War has also been the title track of the WWE - Elimination Chamber since March 2012 . An extended world tour was announced on January 11, 2012, with Seether , Bush and My Darkest Days signed as supporting acts . The European part was planned for September and October 2012, and Daughtry was again the support act .

On September 26th, 2013 Nickelback started “The Hits Tour”. The band's eighth studio album, No Fixed Address , was released in Germany on November 14, 2014. The first single Edge of a Revolution was released on August 19th.

The “No Fixed Address” World Tour was canceled on August 13, 2015 due to vocal cord surgery by frontman Chad Kroeger. This was postponed to 2016.

Feed The Machine (2017)

On February 1st, the first single, Feed The Machine, was released for their ninth album, Feed The Machine , which should be released on June 9th. This was delayed by a week, so that it then appeared on June 16, 2017. The Feed The Machine tour of North America began a week later on June 23, 2017. The album was released on BMG Rights Management label, under the direction of producer Chris Baseford.

In 2018, Nickelback toured Europe with Seether as the opening act and stopped in six German halls.

style

The band's musical style is hard rock and the sub-forms alternative rock and post-grunge . But other styles also flow into the songs, especially grunge .
