Jerry Fulton Cantrell Jr. (born March 18, 1966 in Tacoma , Washington ) is an American rock musician. He became known as the founder and member of the rock band Alice in Chains .

Career

Together with bassist Mike Starr , singer Layne Staley and drummer Sean Kinney , Cantrell founded the band Alice in Chains in the late 1980s , where he took over the position as guitarist, singer and main songwriter. While the work with the band was on hold because of Staley's heroin addiction , Cantrell released his first solo album Boggy Depot in 1998 , on which he worked with musicians from the bands Fishbone , Pantera and Primus , among others . In 2002, after Layne Staley's death, Degradation Trip followed , which he dedicated to Staley, with Robert Trujillo on bass and Mike Bordin on drums, who had previously formed Ozzy Osbourne's rhythm section .

Cantrell plays guitars from Gibson (Les Paul), G&L (Rampage and ASAT) and Dean (Soltero and Schenker V) and amps from Marshall and / or Mesa Boogie. When Alice in Chains appeared on MTV Unplugged, he played a Guild dreadnought model .

style

Due to Cantrell's early influences, Alice in Chain's heavy metal songs clearly stood out from the other grunge / alternative rock bands in the Seattle music scene . His musical direction extends further to even blues and country , as you can hear especially on his solo albums. Jerry Cantrell is known for using a wah pedal as well as odd time signatures . In 1998 he was asked about the latter quality in an interview with Guitar World :

I really don't know where that comes from; it just comes naturally to me. I could sit down and figure it out, but what's the use? Off-time stuff is just more exciting - it takes people by surprise when you shift gears like that before they even know what the hell hit 'em. It's also effective when you slow something down and then slam 'em into the dash. A lot of Alice stuff is written that way - "Them Bones" is a great off-time song.

I really don't know where that came from; it just comes naturally. I could sit down and go through it all and find out, but what would that do? Off-time is just more exciting - people are surprised when you switch and they don't even know what's going on. It's also very useful for slowing down a bit and then beating all the way back up. A lot of the Alice numbers are written like this - "Them Bones" is a great off-time song.
