Nickelsdorf is a municipality with 1797 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Neusiedl am See district in Burgenland in Austria .
The Hungarian place name is Miklóshalma .
geography
Nickelsdorf is one of the easternmost communities in Austria. To the east of Nickelsdorf lies the important road and rail border crossing to Hegyeshalom (German Straß-Sommerein ) in Hungary .
history
After the Hungarian conquest, Petschenegen were settled here . The Pechenegs lived here as border guards of the Hungarian kingdom. The community was called Turdemech at this time (Turdemicz, Thurdamesz, Tordamez). In 1532 it is mentioned as Miklósfalu . The place belonged to Hungary in Moson County until 1921 .
After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
Population development
Culture and sights
- Evangelical Parish Church Nickelsdorf : The church or prayer house was built in 1787 and consecrated on October 11th that same year. After Protestant churches were allowed to have a tower and a bell from 1791, the first bell was purchased in 1797 and raised in a wooden frame. In 1823 an octagonal tower with a bell chamber and pointed helmet was added to the northwest facade. In 1975 the buildings in front of the church were demolished so that a large church forecourt was created.
- Catholic parish church Nickelsdorf hl. Nikolaus: The previous church was used by the Protestants during the Reformation . On August 24, 1673, it was returned to the Catholic population by Bishop Count Kolonitsch with the help of 40 soldiers. From 1904 onwards, a new one was built immediately to the north instead of the predecessor church, which was too small and dilapidated, and was consecrated on October 15, 1905. It has a single nave nave with buttresses, an east tower, a stair tower and a retracted choir . The four-bay nave is vaulted with ribs, the gallery has three axes with a parapet in front. The three neo-Gothic carved altars date from the construction period. The previous church was demolished during the new building and some of the building material was used for the new building. A parish garden was set up on the area that was freed up and the funeral hall was built on it from 1972 to 1974.
