Wallern im Burgenland is a market town in Burgenland in the Neusiedl am See district in Austria with 1678 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Valla .

geography

Wallern in Burgenland is located in Seewinkel , a few kilometers from the Hungarian border. With an altitude of 120 m, Wallern is one of the lowest-lying places in Austria.

history

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Valla be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

Wallern has been a market town in Burgenland since 1998.

In addition to Mayor Helmut Huber (SPÖ) and Deputy Mayor Theresia Gerstl (ÖVP), Jürgen Amelin (SPÖ), Andres Kampf (ÖVP), Ernst Oroszlan (SPÖ), Sonja Summer (SPÖ) and Franz Traudtner (ÖVP) also belong to the community board.

Mayor is Helmut Huber (SPÖ), who succeeded Johann Müllner (SPÖ) in 1996 , who has headed the community since 1972. In the direct mayor election 2017, Huber was confirmed in his office with 65.00% of the votes. Theresia Gerstl (ÖVP) achieved 35.00%. In the constituent meeting of the municipal council, Gerstl was elected vice mayor.

Office manager is Franz Unger.
