Pama is a municipality with 1208 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Neusiedl am See district in Burgenland in Austria . The Croatian place name is Bijelo Selo (dt. White Village) and appears on the town signs together with the German name. In Hungarian the municipality is called Lajtakörtvélyes .

geography

Pama borders on Kittsee in the north, Gattendorf and Zurndorf in the south, Deutsch Jahrndorf in the south-east and Lower Austria in the west and Slovakia in the east.

The unpopulated area is used for agriculture, there are hardly any forests. Part of the municipality was declared a bustard reserve.

history

After the Turkish wars , the severely decimated population (Pama had become “semi-desert”) was supplemented by the influx of Croatian-speaking people. Most of the services are held in Croatian .

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Mosonkörtvélyes be used. After the end of the First World War , Austria was awarded to German West Hungary in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded state of Burgenland since 1921.

Before the Second World War, Jewish families lived in Pama, as in the neighboring village of Kittsee, which is one of the seven Jewish communities in Burgenland . After Austria's "annexation" to the National Socialist German Reich , the Jews living in Kittsee and Pama were expelled from their homes on April 16, 1938 and abandoned on a lonely island on the Danube .

In recent times, due to the exposed location on the Schengen eastern border, Pama has had an army platoon command post for assistance in border area surveillance to monitor the borders.

coat of arms

AUT Pama COA.jpg Blazon : shield quartered , 1. In red a golden upright ploughshare , 2. In gold, a red six-pointed sun , 3. In gold, a red sickle directed to the left , 4. In red, a golden bunch of grapes .

The municipal coat of arms is based on an old seal that has been used since the 18th century. Ploughshare and sickle stand for agriculture, which plays an important role in Pama in the past as now. The grapes are intended to remind of the winegrowers who used to grow wine in the Edelstal vineyards. The sun depicted in the coat of arms symbolizes energy.
