Sankt Andrä am Zicksee (until 1982 St. Andrä bei Frauenkirchen ) is a market town in Burgenland in the Neusiedl am See district in Austria with 1,369 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Mosonszentandrás .

geography

Historically, Sankt Andrä am Zicksee is a broad anger village , about two kilometers east of the Zicksee in Seewinkel . In the municipal area there are three individual Meierhöfe farms and the Zicksee weekend house settlement directly on the Zicksee .

history

St. Andrae and the Zick-Lacke (bottom left) and the surrounding area around 1873 (recording sheet of the regional survey )

Sankt Andrä was first mentioned in a document in 1437.

In 1437 and 1529 - in the course of the Turkish wars and in 1605 during the Bocskaia uprising - the place was destroyed, was desolate for a long time, and was re-established in 1696. The first 20 houses built after the re-establishment were already planned in the form of a wide Angers, which is still recognizable today.

Like the whole of Burgenland, St. Andrä belonged to Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Szent András be used.

After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). The postal name of the place was St. Andrä near Frauenkirchen until the 1980s . Sankt Andrä am Zicksee has been a market town since 2002 (through LGBl. No. 66/2002).

On March 17, 2017, the municipal council decided to hold a referendum on the construction of an Orthodox monastery, which on June 11, 2017 brought a clear majority for the construction of the monastery.
