The Zicksee is a small steppe lake in the Seewinkel southeast of Vienna . The water contains soda and it is said to have healing properties (especially for skin and rheumatic diseases). It lies between Lake Neusiedl and the Hungarian border and is partially covered by reeds. All around the Zicksee there are gravel and gravel vineyards.

The muddy bottom of the lake contains a lot of sulfur, Glauber's salt and soda, known by the people as "Zick". Hence the name of the lake comes from.

Water quality

After an analysis of the lake water in 1928, the water quality was classified as mineral water, with groundwater as the source of the mineral water.

In the 2000s, the shallow lake becomes cloudy during the bathing season due to the constant swirling of the mud floor by bathers. The water of the Zicksee does not contain any pollutants, but drinking water quality is only achieved outside of the bathing season. The EU report on swimming water quality for 2011 and also for those in 2012 shows the lake as one of three bodies of water in Austria whose water quality does not meet the minimum hygienic EU requirements.

water sports

Due to its shallow depth, the Zicksee has a relatively high water temperature (spring and autumn around 15 ° C, in summer mostly well over 20 ° C). The Zicksee is a windsurfing area , there is a surfboard rental right on the lake. Due to its shallow depth, it is a shallow area and well suited for beginners, water start students and speed surfers. The surf spot is just outside the town of Sankt Andrä am Zicksee .

Infrastructure

The wide plains of the Seewinkel are ideal for cycling tours, for example to the Lange Lacke nature reserve near Apetlon or to the east to Andau . A campsite with approx. 370 parking spaces is located directly on the lake and is open from May to October. There are also private rooms in Sankt Andrä am Zicksee. Paid parking spaces are available at the lake and there are a few restaurants on the shore.

Impending dehydration

Changes to the water law in 2010 reduced the amount of groundwater that can be pumped into the lake from 2.1 million cubic meters to 300,000 cubic meters per year. In 2011, the permitted amount was exceeded because the responsible pump attendant did not switch off the pump in time. Therefore, only the remaining amount of 38,000 m³ remained for 2012, which meant that the water level was 1 m below the previous year's level. It was feared that it would dry out completely over the summer, but then it just did not occur. In 2013 the water level was slightly higher again in summer. The permeable bottom of the lake is now to be sealed.
