Andau is a market town with 2280 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Burgenland in the Neusiedl am See district in Austria .

The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Mosontarcsa .

geography

Andau is the only place in the parish. It lies on the northwestern edge of the Pannonian Plain . Due to the favorable climate and the numerous days of sunshine, the area around Andau is used for a variety of agriculture. The area of the market town also belongs to the Neusiedlersee-Seewinkel National Park .

history

Andau is first mentioned in a document in 1487 as Zantho . This form goes back to the Hungarian word szántó ("field"); the settlement was named after its location on a field and the area was originally settled by Hungarians. As was common with originally Slavic place names in Eastern Austria between 800 and 1200, the Hungarian initial / s / was initially adopted into German as [ts]. Later this initial sound was identified with the mhd preposition ze , which is common in place names , which meant that the supposedly actual name was only Andau . The name of the Burgenland municipality of Antau goes back to the same origin .

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

In the course of the Hungarian uprising in 1956, more than 180,000 people fled Hungary to western countries. One of the last options was the Andau bridge over the Einser Canal , over which more than 70,000 refugees reached Austria. In 1956 the bridge was blown up by Soviet troops, but it was rebuilt in 1996 and is therefore a reminder of that time.

A film ( Der Bockerer III ) with Karl Merkatz in the lead role also deals with the bridge in Andau .

Andau has been a market town since 1991 (through VO 85).

In 2018, the Austrian record value of 127 summer days was registered in Andau (previous record was 120 summer days in Leibnitz in 2003).

After the building permit was granted at the end of 2010, the wind farm with a total of 79 wind turbines has been in operation since August 2014. The wind farm is operated by Energie Burgenland Windkraft , a subsidiary of Energie Burgenland .
