history
The earliest written document is from 970 and reads "civitas Lipnizza". The name goes back to the old Slavic Lipъnica (linden settlement).
Population development
Economy and Infrastructure
Leibnitz is primarily known as a wine, culture, school and shopping city. There are restaurants and hotels near the main square. The Leibnitzer Feld is used intensively for agriculture. Traditionally, the cultivation of kukuruz (ugs. Also called “woaz”) and pumpkins , from which Styrian pumpkin seed oil is made, predominate here . With the closure of the Hermann barracks in 2007 as part of the army reform, Leibnitz's 46-year military tradition as a garrison town came to an end.
The surrounding hills are used as wine-growing areas. There are taverns on them , most of them in the nearby communities of Kitzeck and Gamlitz .
Public transport and accessibility
Leibnitz is connected to the Styrian rapid transit network with hourly connections to Graz main station and Spielfeld-Straß . The interval is compressed at peak times. Two pairs of Eurocity trains run to Vienna and Ljubljana and Zagreb via Maribor . The Leibnitz train station was rebuilt by 2012 to a modern transport station. The Pyhrn Autobahn A 9 leads directly past Leibnitz.
Leisure time
In the winter season there is an ice rink, in the summer the municipal outdoor pool with a campsite and sports facility, tennis courts and mini golf course is open. Leibnitz also has a city library and a cinema. A service and shopping center was realized from 2007 on Wasserwerkstraße. Concerts, gospels and film screenings take place regularly in the “Leibnitz Cultural Center” . The “Marenzihaus” has established itself as a facility for cabarets , jazz and readings. The biggest events are the autumn festival with a parade on Sunday, the Leibnitz Wine Week with the hobby artist market and the day of the Styrian sparkling wine.
The main square was redesigned as part of the 2004 state exhibition with the theme "The Romans in Styria".
Southern Styria in the vicinity of Leibnitz is criss-crossed by cycle paths, with Leibnitz from Graz being connected to the Mur cycle path via an optional branch . The Sulmradweg, which partly runs along the route of the historic Sulmtalbahn , leads westwards for bike tours, for example to Gleinstätten .
Schools and education
The city of Leibnitz has developed into a school center since the 1960s. Two kindergartens look after the youngest. Two elementary schools , two new middle schools , an expiring secondary school and a polytechnical school form the spectrum of compulsory schools.
