The Kreuzkogel (formerly also Leibnizer Kogl ) is 496  m above sea level. A. high hill on the eastern edge of the Sausal in the Austrian state of Styria . It is a popular excursion destination near the district capital Leibnitz and is known for its observation tower. The Kreuzkogel is located in the Southern Styria Nature Park .

Location and surroundings

The Kreuzkogel rises to the left above the exit of the Sulmtal opposite Seggau Castle . It is located in the Kogelberg district of the Kaindorf an der Sulm cadastral community and overlooks the Leibnitzer Feld to the east by about 220 m. While the mostly forested east side drops suddenly towards the Sulm, the west and south slopes are predestined for viticulture . On the southern slope of the mountain is the state winery Silberberg with associated viticulture school and wine trail. The Kreuzkogelwarte can be reached on hiking trails from the north and south, which are also approved for mountain bikers . The Sulmsee and the nature park center Grottenhof near Kaindorf are ideal starting points .

Geology and geomorphology

The Kreuzkogel and the Kittenberg ( 485  m ), separated by a ditch to the west, are built from partially phyllitic clay slate with local green slate layers that belong to the Sausal Paleozoic of the Central Styrian threshold . The Reclining form phyllitic slate with activated meta psammiten that the south subsequent Silberberg below a SW-NE-running failure come to light. The Seggauberg , located southeast to south and geographically forming the northernmost branch of the Windische Bühel , also belongs to this lithology . The Sulm breaks through the rock formation and forms a narrow valley at the exit of the Heimschuher Basin before it joins the Laßnitz near Kaindorf . There is also a quartzite - sericite deposit on the eastern Silberberg .

Kreuzkogelwarte

The Kogelberg winemakers decided in 1849 to erect a cross and a gloriette on the highest point of the Kreuzkogel. The Gloriette, consisting of an approximately 3 m high octagonal stone plinth with a viewing platform and a wooden structure, was inaugurated on August 25, 1850. The building hardly changed in the following decades, and a repair is documented for 1933.

In 1957 a further renovation of the control room was decided, which was financed with donations and subsidies from the Styrian state government in the amount of 3000 schillings . At the same time, the road to the Kogelberg was expanded. There was also an increase in the Gloriette. The Leibnitz Beautification Association had the existing wooden structure removed and raised the brick substructure by 2 m, so that the new viewing platform, accessible via 22 stone steps, was a good 5 m above the ground. Thanks to the new wooden construction including the roof, the total height increased to 9.2 m. In 1963 the popular excursion destination was destroyed by a lightning strike and, after expensive repairs, it was handed over to the Kaindorf an der Sulm beautification association. After another renovation at the beginning of the 1970s, a second floor was added to the tower in 1988/89 under the chairman of the club, Erich Pollanetz. By increasing the wooden construction, the viewing height almost doubled to a good 9 m, the total height has been 13.3 m since then. The platform with a diameter of 5.7 m can be reached via four stone and 43 wooden steps.

The control room offers an excellent all-round view. The view extends from Schöckl and Wildoner Berg in the north over Gleichenberge and Stradner Kogel in the east, Windische Bühel and Pohorje in the south to Koralpe and Gleinalpe in the west and northwest.

Silberbergwarte

About 15 minutes walk south of the Kreuzkogelwarte is at 412  m above sea level. A. the smaller silver mine. The stone tower, barely 3 m high, was built in 1871 by the previous owners of the Silberberg winery in memory of Friedrich Freiherr von Froon zu Kirchrath. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Silberberg viticulture school , students of the final course renovated the control room with their class leaders. A new viewing platform was planned by the architect Dieter Spielhofer and executed by Ernst Mischinger. The opening ceremony took place on April 21, 1995. A 2.2 × 2.7 m metal platform is placed on the 1 × 2.5 m stone tower, which is supported by four slim steel supports. It can be reached via ten original stone and three newer metal steps. A rail from the Sulm Valley Railway, which was discontinued in the 1960s, was used as a railing .

Despite the low altitude and limited panoramic view, the panorama attracts numerous hikers. In the immediate vicinity, Seggau Castle and the pilgrimage church on the Frauenberg as well as the deep view over the vineyards to the Sulmsee are presented.
