The Retzhof Castle is located on the territory of the municipality Wagna in the district of Leibnitz in Styria .

history

A former court in Leutarn (Leitring) was handed over as a fief by the Archbishop of Salzburg to his servant Guntherus de Leytarn in 1318. However, the actual Retzhof was not on the site of the castle that exists today. In 1432 the Aflenzer came into the possession of the court before the Retz, subjects of the Lords of Graz and the Trennsteiner, received the fief from the middle of the 15th century. In 1569 the farm was sold to a steward named Michael Hueber. As early as 1595 the first feudal lord, the Salzburg prince-bishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, sold the Retzhof to the diocese of Seckau. After Bishop Martin Brenner , a counter-reformer, had used it as a retirement home, it was subsequently run by rapidly changing administrators. From 1911 until the end of the war in 1945, the castle was owned by the officer, tournament rider and Nazi functionary Robert Knapp . During the Second World War, Retzhof Palace was used as a regional leadership school for the German youth. The current owner of the castle is the state of Styria, which uses it as a popular education center . Numerous events take place, such as the Retzhofer Dramapreis , which is advertised by uniT, and for which the Retzhof Castle became part of the name.

architecture

Retzhof Palace, which is located east of Leibnitz near the old banks of the Mur, is a symmetrical four-wing complex that is oriented around a rectangular inner courtyard. In the east of the building complex there is a side courtyard with three wings. The corners of the building are accentuated by risalits. The risalit in the west on a baroque central column above the basement is particularly striking . The arcades are from the 17th and the staircase and chapel from the early 18th century. The open, classicist columned hall crowned by a gable was built in the 19th century. The remains of a very massive tower can be found in the north corner. Many stones from the Roman settlement of Flavia Solva were used in the construction of the castle .
