Manfred Josel (born April 24, 1944 in Leibnitz ) is an Austrian musician ( drums ) who has emerged primarily in the field of modern jazz .

Josel comes from a musical family; the trombonist Rudolf Josel is his older brother. Since 1959 Manfred Josel has played in the Josel Trio that his older brother founded with him and the bass player Toni Bärnthaler. The trio played at numerous international festivals, in Frankfurt or Zurich as well as in Bucharest or Belgrade. In 1963 he also played with the New Austrian Big Band (recordings at the 2nd Austrian Amateur Festival). From 1960 to 1964 he was a member of the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra ; In 1965 he was a member of the Vienna Philharmonic .

At the same time he studied piano, clarinet, orchestral conducting and percussion at the Conservatory of the State of Styria and at the Graz Academy of Music until he graduated in percussion instruments (1968). Since 1965 he had a teaching position for jazz drums at the newly founded Institute for Jazz at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz . In 1985 he was appointed there as a university professor for jazz drums. He translated Max Abrams' drum school, which was published under the title Die Technik des Drummers in the Universal Edition . In addition to his teaching activities, he gave numerous concerts at home and abroad with Dieter Glawischnig , Uzzi Förster , Albert Mair , Clark Terry , Andy Bey , Philip Catherine and other jazz musicians. With Emil Spányi and Klaus Melem he released the album Groovin 'with MJ in 1995 . After Tom Lord he was involved in 18 jazz recordings between 1963 and 1997; Among other things, he can be heard on albums by Friedrich Gulda and Steve Gut . In 2014 he was on tour with his brother as well as Pepe Auer and his trio.
