Graz Philharmonic Orchestra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Graz Philharmonic is the opera and concert orchestra of the Styrian capital Graz .

history

The Graz Municipal Orchestra had played an important role in Styrian musical life even before the First World War . His premieres and premieres include that of Anton Bruckner's Fifth Symphony and the Austrian premiere of the opera Salome by Richard Strauss under the direction of the composer in 1906.

Up until the Second World War there were two symphony orchestras in Graz, the municipal orchestra and the radio orchestra of the Alpenland broadcasting group . The Graz Philharmonic Orchestra emerged from the merger of these two institutions on September 1, 1950 . It was played for the first time under Herbert Albert in the Stefaniensaal in Graz .

From 2013 Dirk Kaftan was the general music director and chief conductor . In February 2017, Oksana Lyniv was appointed as his successor from the 2017/18 season.

Today the Graz Philharmonic mainly plays operas, operettas, ballet and musicals. Every year at the beginning of the season, the orchestra plays an opening concert, an Advent concert, the traditional New Year's concert on January 1st, a special concert and the family concerts of the Graz Opera. Members of the orchestra can also be heard as soloists in the chamber music series of the Graz Opera. In the Musikverein für Steiermark , the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra is represented annually with a cycle of symphony concerts and a cycle of soiree concerts (smaller orchestral concerts with works that also present instrumental soloists from the orchestra). Concerts in the Graz area, in the Musikverein Wien and at Styrian events such as the Aufsteirern round off the orchestra's artistic activity.

Guest appearances have taken the orchestra to Nairobi ( Kenya ), Taiwan , Croatia , Slovenia , Switzerland , Spain and Hungary . It also played in various television recordings at the Graz Opera and radio broadcasts.
