Aufsteirern

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aufsteirern is a Styrian folk culture festival that has been taking place in Graz since 2002 on the first Sunday after school started in September . With over 100,000 visitors, Aufsteirern is the largest folk-cultural event in Austria.

history

Aufsteirern goes back to an initiative of the then Deputy Governor Leopold Schöggl , who wanted to offer a platform for the folk- cultural associations of Styria, which are dedicated to the cultivation of folk dance , costume and folk music , with such a large event . In 2001 he commissioned Oliver Haditsch, who had already developed the international a cappella festival vokal.total for the Styrian Choir Association two years earlier , with the conception of the event. This was found in the Kleine Zeitung and the ORF media partners who can be seen as the midwives of this major event. Until 2007 the festival was organized by the Aufsteirern association under his direction . In 2011 he succeeded in entering into a cooperation with the Red Bull Media House , which broadcast the event across Europe via ServusTV until 2015 .

event

Since 2008 the Aufsteirern Festival has been organized by the Ivents Kulturagentur in cooperation with the State of Styria and the City of Graz. Austria's largest traditional costume fashion show, Die Pracht der Tracht, has been taking place as a traditional prelude on Friday on the main square of Graz. Saturday is all about crossover music . The Graz Philharmonic Orchestra has spanned a range from classical to folk music since 2015. On Sunday the classic Aufsteirern takes place in the entire city center of Graz.

In 2010 a total of 2500 people took part directly in the program on a total of eleven stages, including choirs , brass bands, and dance and music groups. There were stalls selling regional food, juices and Sturm all over the city center . The big highlight of the Aufsteirern was a quadrille through the entire Herrengasse in the late afternoon .

Surname

The word Aufsteirern itself is a linguistic new creation that was humorously commented in the daily newspaper Der Standard :

“A federal state that is able to produce such a verb is guaranteed not to lack self-confidence. In Aufsteirern swings as in aufpimpen a pride-is-in-the-chest-throwing, fluffing or Aufbrezeln, with an irrepressible desire in the national dress to throw and to present itself as the world in its full splendor. Yes, in truth, with this verb, Styria even proves to be a federal state with a linguistically unique shape: Because there is an Aufsteirern, but not an Auftirolern, Aufkärntnern or Aufvorarlbergern.
